try safe mode with command prompt, if it boots, run chkdsk c: /F

there are 2 types, pata and sata, if it's quite new it will be sata, then you need the system recovery disk to reinstall windows.

I tried safe mode with command promt and it stuck on the same thing, ive tried to put the recovery disc in and check for errors and it says it cant, ive also tried a reinstall and it goes all the way thru, installs then when it restarts it says the same about waiting for windows to start up

  • thank you, im not so bad sorting out the less technical things such as viruses n such but when it comes to actual hardware ive no idea, when i try to start his laptop up it says "please wait while windows sets up your computer" then does nothing even when left for hours, if i start in safe mode it gets stuck at system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys this is why i was told he needs a new hard drive as its corrupt!!

The fact that crcdisk.sys is the last thing on the screen means that that HAS RUN as far as I remember. The best way to be certain is to try being quick with F8 at boot to allow options to appear for booting, select the "disable automatic reboot on failure"
then you may get a BSOD with more info

remove the hard disk check it's sata, then buy a new 2.5" sata disk from amazon/ebuyer/scan etc, reinstall windows, and if you've lost data, consider a backup strategy.

    Avoid hitachi travelstar next time.

  • Yes then press f8 again straight away then try to select stop restart

pressing f8 at that point has given me loads of options, safe mode, safemode networking, safemode command prompt

    then

    enable boot logging,
    enable low resolution
    last known good configuration
    directory services restore mode
    debugging mode
disable auto restart on system failure
    disable driver signature enforcement

    start windows normally

do i click disable auto restart ?

  • As an aside I think the Lappy does not have an access panel to the disk drive I think you have to lift off the whole top/base assembly (mind you I may be mistaken)
