Co-op bank accusing me of fraud!

You can have my co-op account if you like. I closed it down over two years ago, in writing and over the phone. I got assurances that the account was definitely closed and that I would have no further charges and no further correspondance from the co-op, ever. I still get a regular monthly statement with the grand total of 0.00 "closing balance" and I even received a debit card last year, which I sent back with a rather rude letter. I'm still waiting for writtten confirmation that the account is closed!:mad:"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0

Just within the last three months I managed to open (and subsequently close, because they're sh*t, hence Co-op application) a full Lloyds TSB account and a (not closed at all) Sygma Bank credit card without a hitch. I can honestly state hand on heart I've never lied on a single application for anything. The Co-op are the only ones to raise a stink. In fact they did the same when I applied for a Cashminder three years ago(!), when I had even less money... I was hoping things had changed!
Also, wouldn't going into branch and doing another application just make things look even more suspect to them (for whatever reason they look suspect now... :S)
That looks like someone doing something dodgy with someone else's details, to be honest, I reckon that's the reason for the decline.
However, why are Co-op so damn strict? They don't even give any possibility of credit with this account, so what on earth is the necessity of such a strict credit check?0 -

Report them immediately under the Data Protection Act to the Information Commissioner. That's not on.

Well! Got an acknowledgement letter from the Co-op dated the 26th of October, and today (just within the 28 day period they've got to respond) got my answer that the Co-op are going to be sending me a cheque for some compensation. Or rather, did send me a cheque for some compensation - on the 12th. Which I haven't received yet. They're therefore cancelling the sent cheque and resending everything. I had to ring up and find this out. Couldn't tell me how much the compensation was though. This was all after ringing up last week on the 18th and being told nothing had happened with the complaint.
So, I had to chase up the Co-op to find out about the compensation I've not heard about because they'd neglected to tell me, for the complaint about having to chase up the Co-op for information I've not had because they'd neglected to tell me. It'd be funny if it wasn't so sad.
I asked for £100 on the fairly tight grounds that they'd caused me distress by accusing me of all sorts of b*llocks, and also caused me to incur well over £50 of direct costs. I wonder how much they've given me0 -
Very sorry to hear about your trouble, but also interested as it sheds some light on what might be the reasons for our very similar problems opening a joint a/c with Santander.
Except that in our case they did open the account, transferred the DDs to it, let me pay money in - and THEN blocked it and asked for impossible amounts of ID which we couldn't provide. So instead of refusing to open the account as Co-op did with you, they're now refusing to close it and give the money back.
Glad you've got something out of the Co=op anyway!0 -
Well. Compensation is £50, which is apparently their final offer, and it was outlined to me over the phone that I could never, ever, ever have an account with the Co-operative Bank. Ever.
Good!0 -
If you want to give them a bit of hassle as well as trying to find out why it happened, you could always do a subject access request under the data protection act.

I was considering doing an SAR, but frankly I want absolutely nothing to do with the Co-operative Bank ever again, much less send them my money to give me information I should rightfully have been given already.0
