Napisan, or even cheaper ;) Boots own nappy powder (sell it in most stores and online) should sort out the bacteria issue. This one does work, make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and water, not too runny or thick, paste it on under the arms etc on the shirt, leave for a good 12 hours (longer the better) and wash as usual. Great for getting rid of BO smells.

I am gonna try this on my gym tops which despite 60 deg washes still don't ever smell clean. If it passes this test then it can do anything :D

Oh and roddydogs, yes is the answer. Having just accidentally thrown in a 30 deg top of DHs with a 40 deg gym stuff wash I can tell you that for absolute certain. He looks like he's wearing one of my tops :)

Aussielass are you having any trouble with the drought or are you in the less affected part? Was talking to someone lately and couldn't believe how bad the restrictions are...
  • I tried thirty, and it was ok for coloureds but for whites I found it no good. When doing whites,I have even swapped my ususal Tesco tablets for Aerial ones as I bought some Aeriel tablets when they were half price and found such a difference in my whites that Im going to stick with them.

Belfastgirl - We live on a little island just off the coast of eastern Australia, near Brisbane. We tend to get more coastal showers here than the mainland (Brisbane). It's still pretty green here & our restrictions are less. But 1/2 hour away they have it awful.

But living here we experience either too much, or too little. You learn quite young to conserve water. Just like you learn to check your shoes for spiders. :D
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • I wash nearly everything on 30 with one of those washing ball things from Lakeland and all comes out fab. When it comes to the white wash, I still wash at 30 but I do put in one washing tablet as I did find that stuff was not coming out bright white with the washing ball on its own. Hadn't thought about the bacteria - will no doubt develop some kind of paranoia about that over the next couple of weeks. That said, we are all pretty healthy and smell OK so can't be all that bad.

Sounds beautiful :) glad it's okay where you are...I was wondering how people are managing for washing clothes etc, just heard on the news last week that all non-essential water supplies are having to go (including for crops ) - bound to have an effect on food prices too.

I wish we could send you some rain from here :) could do with a rain free day or two to get the washing dry...

I`m not sceptical any more and I can`t believe that I am using ariel!!! The results are really good and I am more than happy.

Ariel dissolves very well but I tried persil tablets as I had them in and they left crumbs of detergent so I had to do extra rinsing. I`ll be finishing the persil off at 40+ but ariel here I come

edit: a bad rash came back at the end of this day. I spoke too soon. The apparent cleanliness is not, I think, deep enough to get rid of microbes, either that or the bio effect is too strong
  • I can`t believe this. Is this co-incidence. I think not

my dh used to get a nasty weeping rash on his face and spreading to his chest. It stopped and he hasn`t had it back for a long time. I have been washing in ecover at 60

Then I washed some things in persil tabs at 60 and the rash stayed away

I washed during the past 2 weeks in ariel at 30 and the rash came back with a vengence, it started 5 days ago.

oh dear oh dear oh dear, it is either the bio or washing at 30

needless to say the sheets, pyjamas etc are on at 60 in persil this morning

I am not convinced any more about 30 for anything other than outer wear

It seems unlikely to me that it's washing at 30 degrees. More likely is that there isn't as good a rinse on the 30 deg wash cycle. Personally I always put my smalls through a second rinse to prevent itching :) or wash them without fabric conditioner. Maybe try this? Others might know better on the chemistry front tho and be able to explain it in terms of wash temp???
  • my 30 wash cycle was a cotton wash with a temp at 30 (I can adjust the temp dial) so the rinses are the same

    I found this
    http://mail.mtprog.com/CD_Layout/Day_1_21.06.06/1615-1800/ID3_Terpstra_final.pdf
the conclusion states thet hygiene increases with increasing temperature but adding an additional rinse as well as higher temperature is even better. Many microbes are NOT DESTROYED at lower temperatures

I hated finding this. I absolutely liked the idea of washing at 30

And don't forget that although bacteria may be killed by soap, things like dust mites etc aren't and need a good 60 degree wash to kill them.
