I wash almost everything at 30 + Econ + Half load settings and it comes out fine. I occasionally stretch to 40. I use Tescos/Sainsburys own brand liquid detergent.
    Happy chappy

I do everything at 30 now as have new machine and used liquid only for this one - I find its great but do spot treat any marks I know about - the bedding is fine and the towels are too - we are not really so dirty - If I was to get my hubby's clothes very very dirty would do 40 or 50 but not unless I had to.
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j

Napisan, or even cheaper ;) Boots own nappy powder (sell it in most stores and online) should sort out the bacteria issue. This one does work, make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and water, not too runny or thick, paste it on under the arms etc on the shirt, leave for a good 12 hours (longer the better) and wash as usual. Great for getting rid of BO smells.
One day I might be more organised...........

Our washing machines don't have a heating element in them. The hoses are connected to the taps. I just turn on the cold water tap. If for some reason I would like to use hot water I turn on the hot water tap and change a setting on the washing machine. Very easy.

The washing powder is designed (here) for hot or cold water washes. If you read the fine print on your washing powder boxes yours may be too. I always pre-soak my whites so never go yellow.

I've never been concerned about bacteria either. Dirty little hussy that I am. :D Frugal- If it's not too complicated with your machine I'd give it a go if I were you. If your not happy with your wash, just change back.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

If worried about bacteria, why not add a couple of spoonfuls of borax in the conditioner compartment? It is a mild disinfectant and also helps with funny smells.

I wash most things at 30, but towels at 50+ (depending on grime status!) because a lot of the time my (slobby) teenagers throw towels on the floor and leave them there until I find them!

Sheets also washed at 50+ in winter, I only change them every 2-3 weeks in winter as we wear pijamas and do not sweat as much as in summer. Higher temperature also because in winter we dry indoors and they don't dry as quickly as in summer in the garden (when I do not use high temperatures for hardly anything as the sun sterilises everything when it dries!).

Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
