I do almost everything at 30 now.

I was concerned about bacteria but now I pop in a wee bit of Napisan in every wash and don't worry anymore ! It can be used with colours as well as whites ;)

I also use half the amount of powder that I used to use !

(we are a family of 5 so do a LOT of washing!)
  • well I am waiting for my first wash with ariel 30 to finish. White cotton sheets and pillowcases. We`ll see

I have decided to do all my washing at 30 this morning and all with ariel 30. If it is efficient enough to get rid of any dirt, stains etc then I think the bacteria will leave too. I`ll be drying it all on racks inside in a sunny room as I cannot dry outside.

We`ll see as I am being very open minded about this one. If my towels are hard then I`ll be finishing the box of ariel tablets and I`ll be going back to ecover and 60. I use bashing balls in every wash so nothing will have changed apart from detergent and temperature

When I lived in New Zealand, it was normal for people to do virtually all their washing in cold water, using a cold water detergent. I did put really nasty stuff, like sheets with poo stains on them from the kids, in at a higher temperature, but apart from that it was cold all the way. The only thing was that you needed to do a hot wash from time to time to clean any gunk from the machine.

The thing is that the detergents are designed to work at the lower temperature, so I don't think bacteria is an issue.

I've always washed in cold water and I'm still alive to tell the tale. :D I don't think many people wash in hot water here. Our clothes come up clean. Saves a fortune on hot water.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • the white sheets look ok. No different to using ecover at 60

    Dark towels are on now

mixed whites later and they`ll be the real test

i read another thread somewhere on the site where it was mentioned that americans wash in cold water too - apparently their washing machines do not even have a heating element. in america they are often over-hygienic, so the bacteria thing must not be a problem (i guess there is something antiseptic in the washing powder?).
i have been doing everything at 40° so far, but i think i am going down to 30° now and maybe end up cold as well if i dare.

I remember my whites going yellow though in Thailand and Australia in the cold washes. I had to throw two tops while I was there. I'll try and do 30 more, but still dubious! :rotfl:

When people washed everything by hand, not so very long ago, the wash water would not have been 60 degrees thats for sure. We have all been conditioned to be too clean by advertisers, in my opinion. Or rather to worry about being clean enough. We have all seen the reports on asthma and allergies increasing because we are becoming too sterile.
