seems to be only newer machines that have the 30c wash and as much as it maybe environmentally friendly its not very money sving to buy a new washer so i can have a 30c wash!! so i wont be getting a new one till this one gives up (hope i've not jinxed it now)
Yup same as me! Mine will be as eco-friendly as I can get when the time comes to replace my existing one - on a water meter now and I would rather wash at 30 to save electric and our clothes.
Which with my luck will be soon, as car and house insurance are due next month and these things always go in 3's :eek:0 -
I wash at 30c and only use about 2 teaspoon of powder.
My washer takes hot or cold fill and is next to my sink sharing the same pipe. It's a Bosch and uses very little water so sometimes the water cuts off before the hot reaches the machine as the boiler is in the loft. All the hot is left in the long pipe run. Then the machine spends ages heating up the water and using electric. After a couple of times doing this I got wise so now I run off the cold/warm into the washing up bowl and use it. Then I switch on the machine and the hot goes straight in. The wash cycle is much quicker and uses less electric.
As someone else has said, it's put on on cheap electric to finish before the normal rate come on.
Gosh, I hope all that makes sense!!Doing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......

I don't wash anything below 50° and all towels and sheets are all done at 80°.
But.... at 40° my wash takes 2 and a half hours. If I do a quick wash (at 40°) which takes an hour everything is still dirty no matter how much/what detergent I use. By washing at 50° and above I only ever have to do short washes.
I have often wondered which is best: 1 hour at 50° or 2 and a half hours at 40°. Does anyone know?0 -
WARNING - watch out if a clothes label says wash at 30 degrees!
Our washing machine doesn't have a 30 degrees setting, so I stupidly decided to wash my new item bought from Ebay on a delicates wash at 40 degrees. It couldn't make that much difference, I thought....
BAD idea. Said item went into the washing machine as a lovely fluid fully lined lightwaight and floaty skirt and top suit, and came out as a stiff and shrunken viscose outfit with the lining two inches longer than the skirt and top - and so scratchy you could strike matches on it!
Oh well, I suppose it was only a bargain from Ebay (but it is not much of a bargain now!!):rotfl:

Since christmas 2006 I have been doing my everyday washing at 40degrees using ecozone washing balls, and havn't regretted it once.
Washing balls are 3 plastic balls filled with natural minerals that oxygenate the water washing you clothes without using chemicals, check out https://www.ecozone.co.uk for more info, you can only use them at 40 or below and they are brilliant if you suffer skin allergies. They cost £35 but they last 1000 washes meaning each wash cost 3p! now compare that to brand name tablets.
As i said I've been using them since december 06 and they only problem I had was with really dirty gardening or decorating clothes, but as I then just re-wear them for mucky work again I dont care too much.
PS: dont forget if your still using your washing machine drawer for liquid or powder to pour hot water from teh kettle down it now and again, this stops the liquid or powder clogging and water pouring out the drawer mid cycle. My dad's a washing machine repair man and he keeps getting call outs for preventable things like this.01/08/09 - Honeymoon credit card - 0% £2500 - personal OD £350 - DFD May2010Done it once, will do it again - DFW 5340 -
I have only had my new machine a week and am just getting used to it. But it has temperature dials on it now so I did a wash at 30 deg with my usual Ariel tablets (2) but to be honest I wasnt that impressed. Was I doing anything wrong or is it cos our water is hard, and I mean hard..
Have just done the bedding on 90 deg and it is lovely and clean
Now just have to figure out how to do the dogs blankets and cat blankets without getting all the hairs in the machine..Mortgage Free as of 20.9.17Declutter challenge 2023, 2024 🏅 🏅⭐️⭐️

I've tried 30deg but I found that it just doesn't get stains out and with my kids there's a lot of them. It doesn't work out that well if I use it with the low stained stuff as I'd have to wait ages to get a full load.0

I wash most things at 30 or 40 ºC, but do my bedding at 60 º (kills off the dust mites, as I'm allergic to them) Tend to use the quick wash cycle and more often than not put the washing machine on through the night on the cheap rate electricity.
I try and wash out the powder/conditioner drawer regularly in the kitchen sink, so it doesn't clog up. Currently using a mix of the Persil Ultra liquid and Lidl's washing powder (either/or and not both at the same time!) depending on what I'm washing
Prefer to dry my clothes outside on the line and will only use the tumble drier in the winter (again through the night)0
