christmas 06 stocking filler hunt

  • Last year me and my DH had a £5 maximum limit on Christmas presents - yes, really! And stuck to it.

We both ended up with loads of stuff - freebies, Ebay bargains, cosmetic and aftershave samples begged from the counters in posh shops, charity shop bits & bobs, and then other things that we'd made for each other and tokens for back massages, 'get out of cleaning the bog free' cards etc.

Everything was individually wrapped and I really appreciated how long he'd spend making stuff and tracking down freebies (we had to keep the receipts to prove there was no cheating).

We used the money we'd saved to pay for a holiday - just the two of us - later in the year and we're going to do it again this year. I honestly didn't miss the expensive presents as we both had gifts from friends and family and had all the traditional food, decorations, Doctor Who on TV etc.

We're both self-employed and would rather have time together than be working overtime, separately, to buy each other bling!

This is a brilliant site with lots of stocking and craft gifts. Best of all a percentage of what you pay (up to 25%) is given back to your elected school/ nursery/ playgroup or donated to a charity of their choice (i.e Childline). Their sales can be amazing.

Yes they are good - I use them for Lark in the Park (charity for special needs youngsters) Our code is (I hope I am allowed to post this - newbie here) ~ SLA1428:j
  • Went into a British Heart Foundation charity shop today and they have a brilliant selection of the most gorgeous hair clips and scrunchies, more for women and teenagers than little ones, for £1.50. These are 'new' items not donated goods.
...it is not of more importance than daily life, which I have an enduring wish to make as useful and beautiful as possible.

  • I make everything - ok it costs more that £5 but is still loads cheaper than bought and i love doing it - this year i have made soap in two fragrances - patchouli and lemon for the men and ylang ylang and lavenfder for the girlie baskets - i added calendula to the mens soaps, it just adds colour and doesn't look feminine and rose petals to the girl's soaps - some of which will be used for my daughter to take to school for her teacher and friends. I am going to make shampoo in the same frangrance as well as bath salts which i am putting into jars with the essential oils and then the rose petals or calendula.

So a little basket, soap, shampoo, bath wash, room freshner, bath bombs. pot pori - i collected beech nut cases from the trees. some pine cones and other bits and bats, added the essential oils and voila! Oh i dried some orange and lemon slices in the oven too for the pot pouri and added a bit of either calendula or rose petals to each bag. When i have finished i will have made enough for everyone at less than half the cost than it would for something half as nice and substantial in the shops - i also made lovely little labels on the computer - i will finish the baskets off with some cellophane when i can find it and some ribbon - i have the ribbon which i bought in the sales after Xmas last year.

I can make it over a period of weeks and finish it all off just before Christmas as some of the items don't have a very long shelf life but then i will only use 100g bottles so not huge amounts - i will make it up in a bulk batch and then transfer to the little bottles - i can use any left over for myself ;-)
