well surely a possible solution was better than no option at all?

This happened to us. Bought online ins and docs were in the post. There was no option to print the policy. Went to the PO and they said a fax direct from the insurers to them would be acceptable. Insurers had no prob doing this.

I think the way some might look at it is that a car legally needs to be taxed if it is on a public road. So some insurance companies might try to get out of it as the car shouldn't have been on the road when it was involved in an accident.

They might try but they will fail :)

though have heard of some people getting nicked when drivning a car without an MOT and therefore no Insurance. An Insurance company will always pay out for the other party, though they might try and get the money back if they deem you have acted incorrectly.

Please don't start the "no mot=no payout" thing again....it's not true & has been discussed several times recently.

But you are legally allowed to drive a car that has no MOT to a prebooked test, though I am not so sure that you can if you have no Tax.

    Yes, perfectly legal!

    UPDATE.
I went to the Post Office 1st thing this morning to buy a years tax and accept that it would get back dated to the beginning of september losing me one months road tax. The man at the post office beeped my Log book (green slip) and said it will over lap as it have it taxed currently. I played along and said yeah but im selling the car with a years tax. So he said ok if you want ill start it from october 1st. Then he told me to display this one now and remove my old one for a refund from DVLA before the end of this month so I get a full month rebate for october. I say that was a result. My original point was that it was stupid that the only place a new owner can purchase tax was at the post office.

When exactly did I say that?

I said that I have known people who have been nicked for two specific reasons and had the car impounded by the old bill, remember that what happens in court is very different to what happens at the side of the road, if a copper pulls you over for no MOT then he may just charge you with no Insurance, that doesn't mean the charge will stick or the CPS will or won't drop the case, but it surely means that you will have to walk home and you will have a large bill for the impound and tow.

Lets not confuse case law or the opinion of the ombudsman with what actually happens in the real world, after all not many people that are arrested and charged with crimes actually make it to court.

You know that you aren't allowed to display the new disc until it is valid, in other words if the disc is for 12 months starting later this week then it isn't to be displayed before the first of the month.

And you can't get a refund for a month of tax that has started, so you would have to get it sent off pretty sharpish.

You can also get a tax disc from a DVLA local office.

If you read my previous post you will see that I stated that you could get a disc for next month and that the previous Tax would still show as current on ANPR. Providing that the previous owner isn't in the process of getting a refund, as that may cause the database to be out of date temporarily.

Yes very serious, is it fair to pay fpr back dated tax for days I never even owned the car? or for days that currently i am not even allowed to drive the car!!!

    How is that advice? stupid

Being a newbie around here I would be rather careful on calling people stupid purely because they give you advice you don't like.

    Don't say I didn't warn ya ...

    and the DVLA offices
however on a serious note.where else would you have issuing road tax?
  • They should start issuing VED at PayPoint outlets. Only instead of displaying a tax disc, you display your PayPoint receipt instead.

There is always a shop with PayPoint open somewhere at any given time! :p

This is slightly off-topic a little, but why pay for a month of unneeded tax? I'm probably missing stuff, as I'm skim-reading, but I can purchase tax from whichever day during the month, and it's effective from that date- I've rarely been issued a tax disc that starts at the beginning of a month.

As I said, somebody feel free to point out to me the obvious bit I'm missing (and I'll try not to skim-read again!) :)
