Cover both sides of a piece of card in tin foil, cut out stars and dip each point in glitter. Hang up on a loop.
Asda do tinsel for 16p
and fwiw... I think Christmas trees look miles BETTER when they're done 'over the top' rather than designer. Can't you get some kids involved in cutting and glueing? At least you have the excuse of them being made by kids when they turn out a bit wonkyJust run, run and keep on running!0 -
Cut out largish pictures from old Christmas cards, sellotape a chocolate coin to the back, thread wool or paper ribbon to make a hanging loop.
Fold 2 glittery pipecleaners into triangles (can thread on beads if you have odd ones), interlace the triangles into a star of David, add hanging loop.
Plain baubles decorated with glitterand stickers/fake jewels etc...0 -
Wow! Some really brilliant ideas here...thanks a lot and keep 'em coming as I understand the tree is gonna be in a bay window and will need to be decorated all round. I was hoping it would be in a corner so's I wouldn't have to bother with the back!
Now I need some inspiration for a piece de resistance for the top......personally I prefer a really gaudy fairy...sort of Lily Savage meets Bet Lynch stylee...but I could be persuaded otherwise....:D♥♥♥ Genius - 1% inspiration and 99% doing what your mother told you. ♥♥♥0 -
You could make some sort of snowman out of cottonwool,i dont know how but the thaught was there
Put a santas hat on the top of the tree intead of a fairy0 -
Paper mashay (sorry havent a clue how to spell it!) into balls can make nice baubles dipped in glitter can look quite nice, and nearly free!!0

For the topping, charity shops for shocking pink barbie type doll, or if you really want the Lily Savage approach, get an Action Man type doll and dress it in drag!!0

How about gingerbread shapes, stars bells, trees etc - I'm sure that there will be a recipe hereabouts and cutters should be easy to find. Then you just need ribbons to make a loop, if you've got some littl'uns this will kill 2 birds with one stone, you keep them busy and fill the tree as well. You could buy some candy walking canes as well!
Strung popcorn was mentioned earlier - you can do the same with peanuts in the shell0 -
We use to have a fairy on top of our tree until she flew away one day (well thats what we told the kids when we couldn't find her) so now its a big star made from a metal coat hanger wrapped in really thick silver tinsel. As for decorations, after using eggs for cooking save the two halves of the shells and after washing them you can paint and use as santas body adding a face, hat, beard(cotton wool)cardboard legs ect, my kids love making these. We even made these when I was a child and my mum has still got them.Rebel No 220

My mum used to collect and dry wishbones from the chickens she cooked during the year and spray them with silver and gold for the tree. Not sure why she did this
, but they did look quite pretty. After she died I swiped one and still hang it on the tree every year.
