It really isn't ambiguous. And the default setting is OFF.

I've just had my orange bill through for £1554

Obvioulsy its a ridiculous ammount of money all I was doing was reading e-mail and I used google maps a couple of times on my iphone.

    Gavin

Orange charge £8 per MB for data use in Australia, that's a lot more than a bit of email and a couple of times on Google Maps.

You would have used around 195MB of data for that bill.

But if roaming wasn't switched off the phone would be using data service all the time, auto checking for emails, weather etc. It can soon mount up.

Exactly. Whenever my wife downloads an app for her iPhone I always insist she says "Don't Allow" if the app requests to be able to use push services.

195MB of data is stupidly easy on only a brief session in google maps, especially considering that it is a new country (so will not be in the local cache) and if you are using it to look around then there will be hundreds of map 'tiles' on multiple zoom levels.

main thing to remember is when you go abroad you only should use (free) wifi to prevent these high bills.

to OP I have to say you used it you have to pay for it, you obviously knew that you would be charged higher rates than when you are at home, hell even the ohone tells you that when you go to turn off the setting preventing such high charges.

I would disagree, in the 3 months I have had my new iPhone (brand new, so no cache) I have used 380MB out and 43MB in.

That includes daily use of the internet and email and Google Maps use at least 2 or 3 times per week.

195MB in a few weeks sounds like there must have been streaming or large attachments being downloaded.

The figures for your usage seem (at the least) to be the wrong way around.
Streaming would use substantially more than 195megabytes over the course of a few weeks.

You could easily stream 195mb in under an hour. There's not a chance you've only used 380mb in three months, unless you've been using the phone on Wifi for most of the time
