  • My 12 year old son just got a bill from Vodafone for £2500 for roaming charges in USA. This was despite the fact he'd turned the roaming off on his Iphone. Anyone else had similar issues and what did they do about it? Cheers

A 12 year old with a contract iPhone?

Asking for trouble and you got it.

Are you sure he didn't put it back on for sneaky Facebook etc usage?

How are you sure he actually turned of data roaming. Yeah! I agree that a 12 year old roaming with an iphone has trouble written all over it. A lot of adults have made the same mistake and paid dearly for it.

He obviously hadn't turned it off, its that simple. I have just returned from the USA and we had an iPhone and a Desire, both with data roaming off, and both used 0mb.

It really isnt difficult and these people running up huge bills and expecting to get out of it are annoying.

I spent 2 months in Australia last year with Vodafone and made 20 hours of calls in total for £0. Thanks Vodafone!

It seems self explanatory that he either didn't, or didn't actually know how to and thought he did. To expect a 12 year to take responsibility for turning off roaming (and do without Twitter and Facebook) seems rather naive, why didn't you ensure the roaming was deactivated?

    Pay the bill?

Or you could contact Vodafone and try a sob story and see if they will discount the charge for you.
Normally they will settle for a portion of the bill (probably one of the reasons roaming is so extortionately expensive, every user ends up picking up the tab for the written off debt run up by naive or ignorant users).

  • Why do people always think that their own kids will be responsible for anything they get handed to them? I've always had to buy my own luxuries and am much more grateful for having done so. IMO. Stupid idea to give a 12 year old an iPhone anyway...

I turned 3g and roaming off when i went on holiday and it was fine, used no data.

So basically, if you used that amount of data, you have to pay for it.
  • the networks may write it off as a goodwill gesture, this is not an indication that they make massive profits on it, only that they in the name of customer service may be willing to take the hit for you if you made a genuine error. They are under no obligation to do this as the networks are charged extremely high roaming charges themselves.
