Im sorry, but I don't think there are any modern cars that can be called a "drivers car", not without spending upward of £25K

• I would say for an 'average' sort of car, the Ford Focus is probably about the best for driver engagement and putting that smile on your face with its handling.

If you are a bit wealthier then the BMW''s are probably the next step up.

Finally if you are seriously wealthy, then an Evo upto a Porsche, Ferrari etc etc.

Tally

Should have bought a Mazda2 (current model). same size as a Jazz and fun to drive.
RX8 is a fine, practical and cheap sports car as long as you can live with 20mpg. The boot is plenty big, thought the opening is a bit small, you can really carry 3 people + driver, the rear seats don't fall down. Can be bought for under £5k no problem. You really need to mention a budget, and depending what it is, any of the above cars would be great. Primera especially (and Almera actually) have the dullest image, but are great to drive. I wouldn't want to drive a Peugeot, and definitely not an old one!
We always got 25mpg out of ours.

Rear tyres might last you 9-10k if you are lucky

The Peugeot 306 Rallye and the 106 GTI are universally accepted as being the last of the great hot hatches and they really were real driver's cars

Everything else since then is too big and too soft, safety and comfort has taken the fun out of modern cars.

All Peugeot's from the 206 (2001) onwards are quite frankly a shower of sh*t.

I would have thought drivers cars would have been cars that worked, and actually got from a to b... lol

all those above would break down apart from the BMW m3... lol

Need to know the budget, acceptable age range and intended purpose all I can assume from the post is that they don't need a huge estate car (as they have a Jazz), but do need 4 seats and 4 doors (as they tried the RX-8). I'm also going to exclude front wheel drive cars just to narrow it down a bit:

Subaru Impreza WRX
Subaru Legacy B4 RSK or GT/B
Nissan Skyline GTSt or GTR
Nissan Stagea RS-four
Nissan Pulsar GTi-R (only if you get it with a couple of spare gearboxes)
any BMW with a decent engine

Nope, the list is still endless.

Cant disagree with any of those really.

if you have a lot of money to blow, get a porsche Boxter, instead of the Mx5

Porsche Boxter just screams "Look at me, I can't afford a 911" :p
