  • L6 UNT the best i have ever seen, on a dundee taxi

but yeah X55 TEC is the reg, the buyer is just showing how it could read with alternative spacing, tbh all that does is increase your chance of getting pulled over when the plods are bored
  • I once saw L4MBO on a Lambourghini :-)

Back to the original topic, the spacing is illegal, as has already been mentioned. I mate of mine had a wrongly-spaced plate, similar to what the OP has described. He never actually got pulled up for it ( though he could have in theory ), however he did have to replace the plates with "proper" ones every year when he took it for MOT, then swap them back again afterwards - he said it would have failed the MOT wilh illegal plates.

Hi I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to check if a numberplate is legal that is being sold on ebay thats on a retention certificate. The buyer said that he got it from the dvla but the format is slightly different to everything else i've seen its

    X5 5TE C

I want to buy it for my boyfriend for xmas but dont want him to end up with illigal plates. I've not done this before so am a little confused with what else i would need to do as part of the transfer service.

    Many thanks

The registration is X55 TEC and if you had a numberplate up, that is how the characters would have to be grouped. If you had a plate made up as X5 5TE C then the spacing is contrary to the regulations and the driver/owner can end up with a penalty notice and forced to replace the plates. They would also not pass an MOT.

But on the other hand, countless people get away with illegal plates :/

Clamping down on it a lot lately, My mate was pulled yet again with his dodgy spaced plate. Another fine.

Claimed he had to space it like that because of the towbar fitted, Didnt wash.

My brother bought a private plate and asked the plate maker to make the lettering really thick to take up most of the plate face - he eventually got pulled over and fined for it being illegal.

Also please note that your car will fail its MoT if the lettering on the number plate are illegally spaced or outside legal "thickness" standard.
  • I think all these number plate variations should be made legal. It would then serve as a warning to sensible motorists that the car bearing such plates is driven by some idiot who puts vanity and appearance above driving safely and spending money on essential maintenance.

Look out for 1AML its on a White Rapide at the moment, now there's a family car. Probably not maintained though!
