talking about how helpful friends can be - well complete strangers can be too! we were on holiday at a caravan park and we were going to have a fish and chip supper from the chippy on site. so of course I asked the guy when we went in if the fish batter contained any milk or dairy products - obligingly he went off to check and the owner came out and asked why I wanted to know. Explained that son had dairy allergy and he said that he uses a batter mix these days and it contained both whey and milk protiens
then bless him, he said he would mix up a small amount of batter for my son and cook a special peice of fish for him!!!! How kind is that?? the chippy was very popular and very busy and son had a lovely supper! the guy also said that he was there every week night and all I had to do was ask for sons special batter on entering and he would make it to order for him. (we owned a caravan on the park then and became one of his best customers as I could safely order anything in batter from then on including sausage in batter, burger in batter or potato fritters! Heaven, pure heaven for me). er, you may not know that most chippies do use the batter mix and its worth asking if it contains any milk products. real batter is just flour water and a little salt so why they add all this milk carp i have no idea!

Hopefully the dietitian will be able to help work out a good diet for your son. In the meantime, it's worth speaking to your GP to clarify what is involved: how to deal with this will depend on how severe the allergy is. I wouldn't panic about the odd non-dairy sweet etc. - 'treats' in moderation are fine as part of a balanced diet and if your son is limited in what he can eat anyway then I'd avoid unnecessary restrictions.

sorry bitsandpieces - I have to disagree with you - an allergy means AVOIDING the allergens! to allow odd 'treats' is NOT helpful as you can never be sure how severe the reaction can be. as I said before, the body for some reason craves the very thing that its allergic to! to 'allow' this only feeds the craving! and the body just develops more severe reactions. and these can be life threatening.

A dairy free diet means exactly that! it includes dairy such as cream and milk and also milk protien, lactose, and whey and all the deriratives from them! but its mainly cows milk which causes problems. sometimes it includes goats milk but very rarely sheeps milk or donkeys milk.

I did say "the odd non-dairy sweet" and suggested avoiding "unnecessary" restrictions. If I wasn't clear, I meant non-dairy 'treats' in moderation. In this situation, it will be sensible to avoid all dairy (and products which may contain dairy) until the OP has discussed the situation with a GP or dietitian who can clarify what is necessary.

    Thanks folks.

Am busy getting some recipes ready as alternatives to his normal favourites. Am sure it will all come good in the end!

As for the chippy that was fantastic and a great advert for the good old fashioned chip shop. My mum and dad own a chip shop and will only make proper batter as well as frying in oil so as not to use dripping as certain clients wouldnt have that! It's fantastic to hear.
Although I get lonely  as a single mother there are always two smiling angels ready to give me the biggest hug in the world. Love you babies :grouphug:

Fear is a disease....Hope is it's only cure!

Teresita- lucky you - parents who own a chippy and you can be absolutely sure their batter contains no milk products! my poor son couldnt have anything from the local chippies at home as the one time I asked if the batter was a mix and was assured it wasnt - they must have lied because within minutes of eating his battered burger (or sausage - cant remember which) my son was on his way to hospital and ended up in intensive care.
please pass on to your parents my congratulations on ensuring that THEIR fish and chips is traditional but also good for you!!!

Thanks for all advice given here - I am 57, had no sense of smell for over 30 years. Was really ill, had no food/drink and sense of smell came back. One of the results was diagnosed Lactose Intolerant. I keep off cows milk, use dairy free soya yogurts/custard/milk/ice cream etc. Can't tolerate soft cheese but seem to be ok on hard cheese. Even the tiniest bit of chocolate will result in allergy symptoms of runny nose/loss of smell/runny eyes. Healthy for me tho. Wished I'd been diagnosed years ago.:mad::mad:

Good Luck with you son's diet.

Stork margarine is dairy free, I would use that. No idea about Pure.
