Hmmmm Why do people get disability just for being deaf. My son is deaf and is a roofer. It does not stop him living a normal life. He goes to the pub, plays pool, black belt at karate, got 11a-c GCSE grades at school. School wanted to put him in a special class and i refused point blank. Nothing wrong with his brain.
Get a job yourself before you worry about other people:mad:
How deaf is your son?
Im deaf but my nephews a total and our life experiances are totally diffrent, you cant compare the two.0 -

He is totally deaf now. He started using hearing aids at 3 but within a few years they werent helping so he stopped using them. He lip reads. being deaf does not affect your social skills or your ability to use your arms and legs. At main stream school if work wasnt wrote on the black board he was given a copy of the teachers notes with the answers blanked out. He was given extra time for oral english and oral french exams only. You cannot speak to him unless you are facing him.0 -
I rang up fraud helpline, and they say that my friend are NOT suppose to have SDA because she only had a middle rate care DLA and to quality for SDA you must have the higher rate of care DLA but they reckon that my friend isn't into fraud because it probably wasn't her fault of wrongful getting SDA as she not suppose to get it. More likely she get away with it and there is nothing they can do about it.
You don't have to get DLA in order to receive SDA...0 -
It's scary just how many people working in the benefits office know nothing about SDA and assume people mean SDP, probably as SDA is now an obsolete benefit and will be phased out as people are moved onto ESA0

No-one knows in the call centres either, you have to wait for them to go and fetch someone old enough to remember it....:rotfl:
As yet there is no news about when SDA will be phased out, all they say is that Incapacity benefit will be phased out but if you're on SDA apparently you're not part of Incapacity Benefit....0 -
My friend had told me she got DLA middle rate care and got SDA as I told her that she shouldn't claimed SDA (she was claimed before 2000) because she was disabled 80% due to unfit for work but I think SDA is only for peoples who had higher rate of DLA care or disabled 80% such as blind person or Industrial Injuries or War Disablement Pension schemes. She never seek any work for 20 years and single lone parent with a child (boy) aged 13.
My friend told me that alots of unfit for work peoples claimed both SDA and DLA no problems but I felt this isn't right.
Is she fraud the system of claimed SDA £78 a week, DLA £47 a week, IS £85, CB £20 a week, CTC £50 a week, HB £125 a week, CT £93 a week total income weekly of £498!
SDA - Severe Disabled Allowance
DLA - Disability Living Allowance
IS - Income Support
CTC - Child Tax Credit
CB - Child Benefit
HB - Housing Benefit
CT - Council Tax
I get SDA and I'm on DLA middle care element, your 'friend' is entitled to it.0 -
No, I am not jealous of her getting more benefits than me because I am seeking work, I want a job rather than on a benefit. I care of my friend and ensure she don't have to pay back at later stages if found she make a mistake of not suppose to have SDA in the 1st place.
sh1305 where did you get this information from about DLA middle or higher rate of care for SDA claim ?
Wow OP you so ARE jealous!
You are not doing so badly yourself though:

IS - £588.40 a month
CB - £81.20 a month
CTC - £217.22 a month
HB - £527.80 a month
CT - £84.60 a month
Total - £1937.75 per month
Forget to add one more as I do have SDA (severe disabled allowance) benefit that pay me £312 a month
So, a total month of £2249.75 a month
You also state in a different post that you would rather not work as you get more from being on benefit. I don't think you are a friend to this person at all, and if you are then you are not a very good one!Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0 -

Does he sign? My OH has worked with a few deaf children and he was very surprised that many dont know how to sign or have never been taught.
What is SDA?

SDA is Severe Disablement Allowance. If I recall correctly, I received it because of being on DLA Middle Rate - Care Allowance and not having a live in carer - although, I do have a carer who comes in on a daily basis.
Sorry that I cannot give you more information but I can't remember anymore about it. Although, I don't receive the amount that the OP is talking about, mine is much lower, about a third.0 -

Your friend does not get £78 SDA a week, she gets the difference between her IS and the minimum amount a severe disabled person is legally required to live on. If my memory serves me right it is about £148 a week, this means her SDA would be £63.0
