Low disk space

Hi I am using Windows XP and Mcafee antivirus etc. The message Low Disk Space keeps appearing and that the system is running on very low disk space in Local Disk C. I have diskcleaned and removed some programs that I wasn't using I had to remove firefox as it kept saying there was a problem. I have scanned with Mcafee and removed anything that was on. But still states running on low disk space. I cannot download firefox again as it says not enough space. Also mcafee runs ok then appears that my computer is not protected when I go on fix it it states not enough space or doesn't fix. Please would any one help I haven't a clue what else to do. Any help greatly appreciated. Many Thanks

right click on the c drive folders in explorer, and see where all the disk space has gone.

programs use little space compared to data, especially video's and music

    run ccleaner.

If you search mse for low disk space, there are links to tools to find out where the space has gone, and methods of resolving it.

Seconded. What do you use your PC for?

If you take lots of photos, scan lots of images, keep a lot of music in iTunes or other places, these things will all eat up your disc space.

Look in the My Documents, My Pictures folders within the C: drive, and see what you've put there. Then decide if you can do without any of it. If you have to keep it all, it's time to get another drive to add to your existing one.

    Download, install and run CCleaner

Take a look at what is filling your HDD by running WinDirStat
  • Thanks for all the replies. I mainly use my computer for browsing the internet and using word. my daughter downloads some music and pictures. I have deleted all the temporary files and tried to download CCleaner but it wouldn't download. I did right click on internet explorer as someone said but it didn't show me the disk space. when clicking on my computer and c drive it states that it is full 69.7 GB and that I have used 69.7 GB it doesn't decrease when I have diskcleaned. Also can't get the internet by going through internet explorer but can via aol. Please can you spell everything out for me not that great on computers but can get around if told exactly what to do. system restore has been suspended because of disk space. Thanks x

I guess it's not just "some". That's the reason why your hard disk is full if you only use it for browsing. Do you have a second unused partition (D:) or an external hard disk or USB stick where you can move some of your daughter's music to? Then you download and install ccleaner and tell your daughter to stop downloading music. It might be illegal anyway and might get you into trouble if she uses a file sharing program and shares copyright protected music...

If you don't have an external hard disk, how do you make backups?

    Hi
Read about ccleaner yourself at the piriform website.
    Download it from there.
    This is the Piriform website:-http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

  • Tronator I am ashamed to say I have never done any backup, I don't know how to. I just use the computer.

Right click on C: , click Explore and it shows you what folders are within the drive.

Your data is in Documents and Settings. You don't need to know how much space it's used, you need to know what's in it.

Double-click D&S, and the folders below, until you get to 'My Documents' or 'User's' Documents, and explore this folder. Once you get to the folders where you've stored Word docs, pictures etc, then right-click on these folders and select 'Properties' to see what size they are. Pick the biggest and explore within these folders to see how many files and how big the files are.

    An alternative approach is to perform a search on the Documents and Settings folder, looking for files over a certain size. Right click on D&S, select 'Search', click the arrow next to 'What size is it' and select Large - this will give you a list of every file on your PC larger than 1Mb, with Filename, the folder it's in, and its size. Click on the header of the size column to sort the files by ascending or descending size. Look at the largest files, and consider if any of them are;

    Word docs you've created
Music files you've ripped or downloaded
    Photos you've taken or downloaded

    and also consider

Do I need to keep these files?
If so, where can I move them to?

Use a USB stick, memory card, or writable CD to move some of these files, if you can, to free up space.

If you DEFINITELY don't need some of these files, you can delete them directly from the search window. Highlight file, hit Delete key. Remember to empty the Recycle Bin once you're done.

Don't delete anything unless you know what it is !!!

When did you last empty your Recycle Bin?
