  • Good luck Mike. Don't take your 'hands off the wheel' as things can sneak back up on you

I was wondering, do we pay VAT on bankruptcy. Mr Brown might be missing out on a growth industry here !!

There has been some fab advice on here over the last few days. It just shows you how much support is out there for people who need it.

We've tried to do our best Mike - waiting for the 'Boss' to get back

  • Hi, Our B-day has now been and gone.

It was all alot less painfull than expected, just alot of being sent to different rooms to wait for various people. The judge had a lovely chat with my daughter about the number of books in his office, and signed, stamped and sealed all that was required. We were also sent straight from court to the OR, so all was sorted in one day.

The OR was really pleasant and did a very good job of reassuring us and explained everything to us, without any presumptions/critisim. We were certainly not made to feel that their was any 'stigma' attached to our present predicament.

We are however struggling to find a bankaccount. We have applied at the Nationwide and have been told it could take up to 6 weeks to get an answerback from head office to okay the (basic) account because apparebntly we have a bad credit rating (no kidding!!).

I have collected an application pack from the Halifax for an easycash account and was very concerned / confused to find that in the clauses under the declaration point 5 states "I am not an undischarged bankrupt"

I have spoken both to the accounts manager at the branch and to someone at the easycash account helpline who in turn spoke to their boss and I was told that being bankrupt wasnt a problem as thats what the accounts are set up for. So I am at a loss to understand this clause in the declaration.

We havent got a Co-Op bank any where near us, are their any other accounts I can try to apply for, as i am now starting to worry about recieving my childrens benifits (CB & DLA).

    Any suggestions?
  • Yes! Go up this thread to where I posted a link to banks that provide basic bank accounts message #336

I opened a Co-op Cashminder Account, and told them the date for my br and they didn't bat an eyelid. The account was up and running within four days.

You don't need to be near a co-op branch - I am not, either! You can access your money using your card at any post office. You can pay money in at a post office, and pay in cheques either in a special envelope via the post office, or by normal post to the co-op. You can check on the balance instantly online. Their customer services is just superb and their security system is unbelievable - I am really impressed!

    Hope this helps!

THanks ROG2. also i am from n. ireland, is the bankruptcy laws here the same as mainland uk? will i have to pay money each month and how long do you reakon it would be before i`m discharged. an iva takes 5 years and then stays on your credit file for another 7 which has sort of put me off that option.

    Hi Jaxo,

I'm having a few problems finding the link for the Insolvecy Service in Northern Ireland (possibly don't have a separate website). However the address is as follows:
    THE INSOLVENCY SERVICE
    Fermanagh House
    Ormeau Avenue
    BELFAST
    BT2 8NJ

    Tel. 02890 251441

I have also been told that you can contact the Northern Ireland Citizen's Advice Bureau for free advice.

Cheers - will post any other info as soon as I can find it.

apols if I rant... I'm fuming atm

    Ok, calmly now....

Here's the thing, at the end of last week I cancelled my dd's to creditors so that I would by the end of the month have the money 'saved' (lol) to pay the br fees etc.

Since then, no end of phone calls, so I'm going to be posting the one slc put up here yesterday (originally posted by someone else), I cannot stand the harrassment any longer.

I've just had a very unpleasant call from MBNA, the same guy who called me on Friday, but this time, instead of being a first name, he is Mr surname. And oh the attitude on him from the word go, 'you haven't done what you said you'd do so we're going to cancel the agreement and put back all the charges and interest if you don't pay up immediately' kind of thing. The condescending little sh1t3. GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrr.

Btw what we're talking about is a loan that I got put on arrangement, they stopped the interest and I've been paying a fraction of the monthly premium for about 2 years. I think the original loan would have been repaid by last month had things not gone belly up. So now Mr surname basically says do I realise what a favour they are doing me, I've had all this money from them, they've stopped the interest and now they are allowing me to take longer to pay it (like 6 or so years longer if it were to carry on).

    To the point girl....

What I want to ask is, should I just ignore him and his threats, let them cancel the arrangement, reinstate charges etc and just wait til the end of the month when I've my br court date? Or do I give in to his harrassment and bullying and downright rudeness and get the payment to MBNA by friday just to shut them up?

I took at call from Egg earlier today and to keep him happy, and because I knew the dd could not be reinstated in time for my next payment due date, I let him reinstate the dd (the first dd would then be after my br date and I'd have cancelled it again by then). This guy, perfectly pleasant and polite, we even had a bit of a laugh and I explained my illnesses to him a bit, then went on trying to offer me help to get things straight as its clear things are boarderlline cos my monthly minimum payment only just stops me being over my credit limit each month. Bless him, I kept saying he wouldn't be able to do anything as any action would require a credit check and with no income and lots of debt, thats just a no no. He's got someone calling me tomorrow to talk about setting up an arrangement on the card - something they wouldn't or couldn't do previously. Am I a walkover? What should I say/do about the Egg call?

Gawd I ranted, sorry, but you guys I'm sure can totally appreciate what I'm saying.

In summary, what I'm asking is
1 - MBNA should I just send the phones calls are harrassment letter and ignore any threats of ending the arrangement etc
2 - Egg, what do you think I should do?

    Thanks people

I have gotten such encouragement from this thread, don't know just 30ish hours after coming here first how I would cope with all this without you now... its all coming real now that slc encouraged me to phone and book a date

  • Don't put your blood pressure up Doushka!!

Just ignore them, they cannot do anything to you!

My phone calls still come, despite that letter, but I answer it and hang up. I don't care any more. Apparently the phone calls will continue until the OR informs our creditors post br.

Once 20/11 has come around I will answer the phone and tell them my br number - and hopefully that might work.

I did tell my bank I was going voluntarily bankrupt and they have left me alone.

MBNA are well-reknowned for being a pain in the you-know-where. You may have demands from them to pay up - after br - just goes to show how stupid they are !

Calm down, it is not good for your medical condition! Stress makes yours, and mine, worse!

It will soon be all over!
