  • its people like you dmg24 that makes this world a very sad place to live! Why come on a forum which is suppose to offer advice and help and all you do is mock people for asking this. May I suggest you never offer advice!
  • oh my god are you really that stupid dmg24!! i will explain again that I got paid from the government when doing teacher training!!

So does my Sister in law [currently] and she works part time and has 2 kids. What of it?
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
  • i couldnt work as it was a full time course - and nobody would employ me as i was in school mon-fri 7am-5pm

So is hers; she has these things [it could be a Wales thing] called weekends and evenings.

    Still, we're all different innit.

  • im welsh!! lol! I was getting good money during the course - i was single and was doing good!! so didnt need to work!!
  • I'm not taking anybodies side on this one, but my sister never worked through uni because she felt she needed to focus on her course; she struggles academically and felt that the added distraction and reduced study time would impact on her grade, and maybe drop her down to a fail. I, however, am more academic, and felt that having a job would benefit me, so I had one all through uni. However, my sister lived entirely off her student loan and grant, which I had as well. Seeing as we both have to pay it back, I don't see there being a problem.
I also agree that the system is unfairly biased towards people who have never worked: I had so much paperwork to fill in when I had to sign on because I could no longer afford to support myself so I moved back in with my mother, and I was classed as voluntarily leaving my job.
I hope everything works out for you.

Well, you'll just have to rely on those savings that you put away during the boom years.

Laura, Can I just ask - are you only looking for teaching jobs? or are you willing to consider anything?
In your position - I would be looking at temp agencies for anything that would pay the money whilst waiting for
some teaching positions to come up.
Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??

Yeah i have joined agencies but as its the beginning of the term there is no work!

    I can't believe that I'm afraid.

My sister worked with a teaching agency for the whole of last year and she wasn't even a qualified teacher yet. She was given temp jobs, from just a day up to a 14 days depending on the situation at the school, and these jobs were offered to her all year. She got a lot of work because she made herself available at short notice (ie a phone call at 9am and she'd be there by 9.30am), across about a dozen schools in the Leeds/Wakefield area. It was great experience as well.

She is now doing a PGCE, has to travel an hour to uni and to her placement each way, and is now looking for saturday or evening/bar work as well. She doesn't need to really, she's living at home and could probably get by easily on her student income and training bursary, but a bit extra always helps.

I also have another out of work teacher friend who does agency work all year.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I don't see how nagging you that you should've worked during your PGCE is especially helpful seeing as you can't turn back the clock. But don't dismiss agencies just because it's the start of term, try a bit harder and you might be surprised.
  • Hi Laura

wow you would think people who have also been in a position where they have had to claim jobseekers would be a bit more supportive, never mind!

Right, I had a problem with jobseekers last year, as I had been working self employed and apparently my national insurance contributions werent high enough to entitle me to jobseekers. I also live with my boyfriend, and I totally sympathise with how hard it is when you dont have time to plan for anything, as the company I worked for for three years went bump overnight and the field I work in very rarely has other jobs advertised so I found it all very overwelming. It took us over five months to get the jobseekers sorted too, bad times...

Anyway, my boyfriend was also earning less than minimum wage working part time, and so after a lot of proving our income and expenditure we were able to have him qualify for income assessed job seeking, which meant as a couple we were entitled to the whole £100ish a week in total. This also meant we got the housing help etc too so its worth seeing if you can do it that way. If youre on income assessed jobseekers youre automatically entitled to the full housing benefit which is a massive help!

Failing that you need to look at working tax credits, as he is more than likely to qualify for them too, as might you, you just need to call up and have a word with them. If you can get this sorted you should also be able to get help with housing costs too as they also recognise working tax credits.

While youre at it, get yourself registered with Hays Education (google it). Theyre a recruitment company who my mum who is also a teacher gets loads of work through. The best thing to do with them is call them up and ask them for some advise about getting work, they will be able to get your CV sorted for you and register you for any supply work they have.

Best of luck getting sorted, Im sure you will find something!
