I want to update my stairs - 1970s orangey varnish in an early Victorian cottage!
Does anyone know where i could buy small pieces of arts and crafts or similar style wallpaper? Thinking of painting treads white then papering risers (if thats the right word for the step up bits!)
Samples? you could collect those you like for free from most wallpaper sellers - or maybe you could get hold of a sample book? Or would wrapping paper work?0 -
It looks a promising start Metranil Vavin and very nice indeed. I have shown DH your pictures. Based on them he has asked me to investigate Annie Sloan paint.
We have recently has permission from our landlord to paint very tired 80's cupboard kitchen doors but he's not been keen based on the amount of work needed (he thought) I think AS is the way forward. We have to paint them white though, but that's ok.
I do have an orange pine wardrobe and chest of drawers to get to grips with those too. Off white/ivory for those but not sure about the chalky surface on my chest of drawer tops.0 -

I'm hoping the wealth of experience on this thread can help me solve my latest DIY dilemma.
I have an old pine dining table which I'm in the process of giving a makeover. I've painted the legs in Crown 'sidewalk' paint and they've come up really well. However the table top is a patchy orange colour. It doesn't appear to be varnished so I gave it a sand down but I can't get rid of the orange. I'm wondering if the original coating was a wood stain/dye which has penetrated into the grain. Can I cover it up with another stain or varnish? I would like a medium oak colour.
I spent all afternoon today trying to cover it with a colron oak wax but it was streaky with orange showing through so I've now stripped all that off again. Arrgh! all day and I'm back to where I started:mad:
Any suggestions/advice would be most gratefully accepted.
Thanks

I have a pine table with painted legs that's got a table cloth on it, but every now and then I have a go at the orange top with thin household bleach, I expect it will look fab eventually0 -
Oxalyic acid is usually what is used to bleach wood - It's quite easy to get off the internet or chemist.0

Metranil vamin I love what you are doing with your kitchen, I am inspired to have a go myself! Got a cream shaker style IKEA kitchen past its sell by date with the laminate coming away, just wondering whether to stick it back down or pull it all off, mind you the wood is probably not that good under enough.
Have you, or are you planning to, paint the insides of your cupboards?
Thanks anne x0 -

Thanks anneNo, I'm not going to paint the insides of my cupboards. I can't see the point to be honest (plus I'm a lazy ar5e!)

You can get glass cut with a bevelled edge to protect the top of your chests from wear and tear.Cross Stitch Cafe Member Number 44:rudolf:Cross Stitch Is For Life Not Just For Christmas :rudolf:0 -
Thanks tricksie. Ideally I think a bleached wood top would be better but I'm not sure if orange pine would bleach?0

Orange pine bleaches fine! See here http://paintedstyle.blogspot.co.uk/2013/07/experimenting-with-wood-bleach.html

Have a try Chalky. Household bleach won't do what wood bleach can do!0
