  • Newbie question- can I add plaster or Paris to paint to make chalk paint?

you can add plaster of paris to make chalk paint.

    30ml of emulsion
    10ml of water
    10ml of POP powder.
add the water to the powder, mix well.
slowly add the water powder mix to the paint and mix thoroughly.
multiples of the mix produce the same.
    ie 300ml paint
    100ml water
    100ml powder.
  • Thanks Steve, that is fab!

I measure home made chalk paint in a plastic tumbler, ratio 3 1 1 too. Tipping the stuff in to a plastic tub. Actually sometimes 1 of water might make it too thin for me. I'm painting a waxed pine desk at the moment, and I've just put my 5th (!!) coat on the top of it. But zero brush strokes showing with this mix, and it's really easy to work with compared to Annie Sloan CP. ASCP is thicker and has more pigment than my Dulux mix, so less coats of paint to cover from brown to white but more risk of pilling and brush strokes.

So, my ingenious upcycle is complete

I had a mirror I was gonna get rid of but at the same time...

...I had a minor irritation of not been able to put my specs and phone on my 'bedside table' after having replaced my unit for a huge one cos of space issues...

    A solution presented itself automatically.

It was the perfect size to fit on the side of my unit with a perfect little shelf too.

A bit of chalk paint and a touch of decoupage to make it 'dressing table-y' and voila!!!

    Couldn't be happier!!

I have 2 chairs that are painted with blue gloss paint - what it looks like anyway. I want to paint them with HM pale grey chalk paint. Help with preparation please.

I once chalk painted a highly glossy ceramic vase as a test for chalk paint adhesion and durability

It passed the ultimate test with flying colours.

So if the gloss paint is not flaking, I would say no prep necessary.

If it's flaking then obviously you would need to sand it smooth first.
