    I've been Money Tipped!
Hi everyone. Have been reading through the thread for the last hour or two while baby napped and am feeling very inspired by all your lovely shabby chicness :)

I'm currently upcycling a tv cabinet. I've sanded the top right back and am planning on just waxing this in clear wax and then painting the rest in a neutral colour. I usually use autentico paint but like the idea of creating my own chalk paint instead (I also like the price difference!). Anyway, have googled plaster of paris and no shops in my area are selling it so was thinkig would this do the job as well? http://www.diy.com/nav/decor/decorating-supplies/fillers-putty/fillers/-specificproducttype-interior_fillers/Diall-500g-Value-Powder-Filler-12599071?skuId=13119777

Probably not but worth a go :)

it might be worth making a small batch & trying it on something.

You can also make chalk paint from powdered grout mix - 2 tblsp to every cup of paint. Although cheap, it doesn't seem to be available everywhere. I got some from an old fashioned hardware shop.

I used Polyfiller before I bought Plaster of Paris at The Range. The only thing about home made is you have to mix enough before you get going, so I always end up with leftovers that are only enough for a picture frame or two.

Thanks for the advice both, went to b&q this morning and found that getting all the ingredients plus wax would've been more expensive than just ordering annie sloan wax and paint so think I'll just do that.

Ordered a pretty knob off eBay to put on the tv stand too. Will post before an after pics when I'm done

im a tiler and white grout is very easily obtained but although i have not tried it i would only use BAL or MAPEI standard white wall grout http://www.bal-adhesives.co.uk/products/bal-grout , dont use flexi grout, rapid grout or floor grout as i imagine these would have a different effect too that tested by others.
if you get on with using grout i would suggest after using it on a few jobs too then try colours ie: cream paints with ivory grout or blue paints with grey grout.
this i imagine might well help with colour loss that you get when using white HMCP or HM(G)P
MAPEI do a vast range of colours http://www.mapei.com/IT-EN/coloured-grouts-list.asp click on products on the right and select kerracolour ff which is as standard as mapei do and should be fine, ive seen websites that have used this but only with white.
moving slightly to the adventurous side they have glitter grout.
    http://www.mapei.com/IT-EN/coloured-grouts-list.asp
which may or may not be useful and may or may not work.
as a tiler im not a fan of mapei but others love it, i really think this would aid when trying to keep the colour paint you have chosen.

those coloured grouts are amazing - do you know how we can find out who stocks them? They don't seem to sell from the site
  • CTD, b+q and many independent tile shops.
b+q probably wont have the full colour range.
it really is widely available, just google your area.

Knobs are sooooooo easy to upcycle.

I've just posted a quick example of one I did today :)
