Has anybody else had these light spots where sanding back oak? Is this the colour I should be aiming to get the whole top to look like? http://instagr.am/p/U8k__Co7m-/

I've down tooled till I can decide what to do next, maybe put some Georgian oak or danish oil on it? I was hoping for a natural wood with wax on top finish.

No, I've not had that. Perhaps they dyed the wood before varnishing. A dye penetrates deeper into the wood. Different areas soak up the dye at different rates...
Perhaps you could dye it again if the light spots are bugging you. Or whitewash the top with very watered down emulsion and that may make it less in your face. Then use your wax/oil/varnish to seal? I'm glad you're enjoying this project. Be careful- it's addictive! ;)

Here's a little project I did this week:

    Teacup candles. :)

I did this for my thrifty wedding. Mismatched cup and saucer candles on every table. And they were the favours for the ladies too. Be careful doing it in a microwave. I used a double boiler, pound shop candles which I grated, and little wicks which stand up on their own.
    Yours looks so pretty!

My latest project that I completed this morning:

    http://pinterest.com/pin/425168021041433590/

It is a recovered stool in chintzy fabric from an old nightgown that I picked up in a charity shop.

I'm really happy with it. :)

    Utterly gorgeous!

I did wonder about melting wax in the microwave.
I have a question after reading your blog - when you said took frame apart - does that mean the glass/backing or did you pull the frame into bits - probably really silly question!

No, I just took off the backing paper and took out the glass and the picture. I have the special tool that shoots out the bendy tabs that hold pictures and mirrors into a frame and I use that to hold everything in again. Not a silly question, I wasn't very clear!

Special tool sounds interesting. I need to get a good heavy duty staple gun - anyone got ideas please?

Just trying out a chalk paint recipe on my living room cupboard

I've used .5 cup plaster of Paris, .5 cup hot water, 1.5 cup of eggshell paint.

How long do you guys leave between coats?

    Cheers

    JJ :)

Water based eggshell hopefully? ;) Waterbased paints dry very quickly so anything from 30 mins to an hour? How's it looking? I've only done it with emulsion. Will you post pics?
