Hi, I've been lurking, looking on in admiration at everyones wonderful projects. I've been inspired to refurb a couple of chairs, but they have drop in seat pads and I need a fabric stapler, any recommendations, please.
Thanks.Mortgage [strike]£70,000[/strike] £1:j

Hi
I have just got this table on ebay for 99p and wondered if anyone had a ideas of how I could give it a makeover - I have just moved and am in the middle of a bit of a shabby chic/cottage-type look.
I've done 2 cupboards in a shaker style cream - one with wooden door knobs.
I don't think it will take the painted legs look and neither do I think the top will look right painted.
Any help much appreciated - thanks0 -

is this it? Your link wouldn't work for me. How about an oilcloth tablecloth - I got some in The Range and on Amazon. Or a white linen and lace one if you get lucky in a charity shop. My kitchen table is covered in a light blue gingham cloth.0

Thanks Chalkysoil.
Yes that's the one - my flat is small hence buying a table that will fold down small and will only be brought out when I have people round for dinner - it will have to be in the living room. I bid on it on a whim not expecting to get it for 99p lol!
It is supposed to be solid wood but I suspect a veneer - I may just stain it back to all the same colour and polish it up.0 -
Looks like teak? Even if it is veneer it could still be painted but the colour in the wood may seep through so you'd have to use the right primer. If you want to stain it darker you'd need to sand it back to bare wood for a stain to work.
I like the linen and lace idea! Very romantic!0 -
I'm hoping it will be teak emma kate - I'm afraid linen and lace might be a bit too twee for my taste - can't wait to see it - pick it up on Sunday - if I stain I would try to keep it to teak as the knobs on the set of draws are teak too.0

Hope this link works - wondered if anyone knew how to get this effect - I think it might work with this table?

Yes, I've done this several times. You'd completely sand/strip all the finish off the top. Paint your legs solid, the water down your paint with 4 parts of water to one of paint and do a wash over the top, while its wet you wipe off with a rag, following the grain, from one side to the other with no stops and starts. You'd have to try it to see what happens as the colour you get is totally dependant on your wood colour. I've done it on oak and pine with paint with beigey greyish tones and that works well. You can let it dry and do further coats building up the wash until you're satisfied. Then protect.
You can see one I did here: http://paintedstyle.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/little-french-bedside-table.html
but my photography is not great.
If you do it with mahogany you can end up with pink so you can add a bit of green to your paint to counteract the red in the wood.
To counteract the orange you could add a smidge of blue. Or stain it walnut or medium oak after you've stripped it, and lighten it after that...seems daft to darken it first but it works! Just neutralises strong colours.0
