Can anyone offer any advice on painting a cabinet that is laminate over chipboard? I was kindly given bathroom cabinet on freecycle, and would prefer it to be a neutral colour rather than the fake mahogany it is now :-)I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

The shabby chic bug has well and truly bitten here
we bought some Annie sloan paint and wax on the weekend to revamp a very orangy pine sideboard for the conservatory, DH got straight on to painting on Sunday and its worked brilliantly :j it looks fantastic, I just need to get some nice door / drawer handles to go on it. DH then uncovered an old small dark wood bookcase that was lurking in the shed, which we've also painted and we've bought a bargain corner unit off ebay too
.
We're really impressed with how far the annie sloan paint goes and how easy it all is. I'm now spending way too much time looking on ebay at furniture and thinking about what we can do all over the house :rotfl:0 -

They're on my phone at the moment, I'm not sure how to get them on here, but I'll have a go tomorrow0 -

I would look out for specific melamine/cupboard primer and paint. You'd have to read the can to see if you need a primer with it.
Or, Annie sloan paint.
Or, Zinsser primer( bullseye 123 water based) and any paint after that.
Happy painting!0 -
Thanks for your reply.
I am wondering whether to get my OH to have another go at our kitchen cupboards. He tried on a bit of melamine but he didn't like the finish....but he didn't sand or prime it *rolls eyes* Perhaps if I have success with the bathroom cabinet, he will give it another go. We have replaced the kitchen tiles and the sink, got the wallpaper and flooring to do. There's nothing wrong with the kitchen units so no point in splashing out on a new one, just that they are cream gloss. Creamgloss
I would probably re-paint them cream or neutral, just not sodding gloss (it looks lovely in some kitchens, it's just not to my taste).
So rather than splashing out on Annie Sloan, can I make my own chalky paint up with plaster of paris as another poster suggested?I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

You could but I personally wouldn't use it on my kitchen cupboards because it's not very tough or durable and probably wouldn't withstand cleaning or grease splashes. I would have thought something more wipeable or sealed would be safer. An oil based paint (eggshell) would be better than chalk as that's too porous. The oil based are the toughest.0
