I have got gilt frames, In the past I have just used emulsion, should I really use chalk paint?

I quite like them, and part of me thinks, what if I want the gilt in the future!

One is just a frame, no back or glass (cheeky charity shop wanted £5 for it). I want to make this into a jewellery holder frame. Would cardboard from a box be strong enough as a backing?

Hiya, Depends if you're going to stick pins in it to hold your jewellery on? If you are then it might be better to use a piece of cork? You can get a cork board very cheaply and demolish it to get the cork. I did this to make a seating plan for my wedding, then I covered it in thin wadding, silk and lace. So you don't have to see the cork. Or you can paint the cork?
I say paint those frames! If you are lusting after gold in future you can hunt down some more!

p.s. emulsion is fine but you probably need a primer first as the adhesion is better!

I'm such a paint nerd. I'm so excited to have found ZINSSER american primer at my local paint shop. (a bit like KILZ for readers of american blogs) which claims to adhere to just about any surface without sanding and can be used over or under any paint. I have a 1950s double wide french style chest of drawers I can't wait to try it on which is perfect as sanding painted surfaces on wood or metal from this era is not a good idea as you're creating lead dust which is toxic. It also claims to kill stains too. So I'll use it on this piece then I can just use emulsion over the top and wax it. Can't wait to try it!
Maybe I need to get out more...
  • Can anyone advise me on how to wallpaper the front of drawers on an old cabinet so that the pattern matches? To make it easier because of the width of the drawers I'm putting the paper on horizontally.
    I'm not that way reclined

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!

I use this stuff, it's amazing, but dries really fast so you need to work quickly, i find for large flat surfaces it's easier to use a gloss roller. good luck!

I've used my first sample of Annie Sloane paint and now have a beautiful painted side table. The result isn't quite as good as I wished for but with time and trial and error I will perfect it before tackling the main furniture.

Next time I will water the paint down, it dried showing brush marks. Even after rubbing it down a couple of times I didn't get the desired look BUT I will perservere.

Thank you for suggesting this paint, I love the colour and the chalk look.
