wow what a fantastic thread :T
I'm about as creative as an elephant and a bit scared to give anything a go, but love the shabby chic look, I'm hoping to do my first project and try and transform a horrible orangy pine sideboard in our conservatory, I've heard lots about Annie Sloan paint, but have no idea where to start really. So would be grateful of any tips please!0 -
One is just a frame, no back or glass (cheeky charity shop wanted £5 for it). I want to make this into a jewellery holder frame. Would cardboard from a box be strong enough as a backing?
I made my daughter an earring holder from just an oval frame - I stapled a bit of a large weave net curtain (from CS) to the back. I spray painted the frame & discovered that the paint made the netting taut so I spray painted that too. I then stapled a length of folded fabric on the back but either side of the frame, towards the top, to use as a hanger then trimmed the frame with a 'rose' made of the same fabric (twirled into a flower) hot-glued to the front.
It's on the wall beside her dressing table - she's had it about 18 months - & it's held up well, although it's just 'fashion' earrings rather than gold or silver which could be heavier.0 -

I dont know about pva, but I have read of similar things being done with mod podge which is something you would find in craft shops.

there is a whole blog dedicated to mod podge here http://www.modpodgerocksblog.com/“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -

I googled Annie Sloane and her website there's a link to stockists
http://www.anniesloan.com/acatalog/Stockists.html
The nearest retailer for me was a good 45 mins drive and although they had one colour I wanted to try, the other was out of stock. Moral being "I should have phoned before setting out". One of my faults and yes I have many is that once I've decided to do something I want it done immediately.
I took a photo of the completed table but have no idea how to load it on here. It was seeing your lovely projects that gave me the inspiration to have a go, x.0 -
hi ok thanks, i can see its called primer but are you saying you use it as a top coat as well?
No, but just like Annie Sloan paint, you don't need to sand at all with this stuff, and it paints valmost anything. It goes a lot further than AS paint and it means your top coat can be anything you want. Water based/ oil based, whatever.0 -

Its just down to personal choice what you use to paint with. Many people, myself included, have had problems with ugly brush strokes on large flat areas when using AS paint, so it might be easier to use a mini roller on these parts. Some people love rollers for gloss too. There's not a wrong way to do it, just use what you like.0
