I also had problems on large flat areas and ended up using a mini roller because you could see where each row of brush strokes ended. The roller took all of the marks away. Luckily you can go over it even after waxing!

I'm such a paint nerd. I'm so excited to have found ZINSSER american primer at my local paint shop. (a bit like KILZ for readers of american blogs) which claims to adhere to just about any surface without sanding and can be used over or under any paint. I have a 1950s double wide french style chest of drawers I can't wait to try it on which is perfect as sanding painted surfaces on wood or metal from this era is not a good idea as you're creating lead dust which is toxic. It also claims to kill stains too. So I'll use it on this piece then I can just use emulsion over the top and wax it. Can't wait to try it!
Maybe I need to get out more...

On their website there's a free book,

You can also find their stockists.

I tell you what, it does exactly what it says on the can! I'm really impressed and I don't think I will ever sand furniture ever again! No need for lumpy old chalk paint! It's a life changing discovery for me!

What paint do you use over it?
I do like the texture you get with chalk paint but there's probably some stuff that would look better with a flatter finish,

wood, masonry, metal, glossy surfaces – and more. Offering great adhesion without sanding, Bulls Eye 1-2-3® is a "bond coat" primer that's great for hard-to-stick surfaces like old glossy paints and clear finishes, metal, fiberglass, PVC, composites –even glass & tile.

Hermum, I'm just using matt emulsion over it. (Two shades with candle wax on the edges in between coats to ease distressing).
Chalky, That's the stuff! I paid £8.49 for 500ml which is more than enough for my huge double wide chest of drawers. I got the water based but there's also an oil based option. I haven't found it dries too fast at all. I'd say it's slower than my usual Wilkos water based primer. But that all depends on your climate and its pretty grim at the moment!

this sounds absolutely fab...i have a dresser that ive been putting off doing as i just dont like the thought of sanding it so i might try it on that. i also want to do my kitchen units..... do you think this would work on them?

It should do, but I think you can get specific melamine paints, some of which might not even need priming so that might save you some time. Apparently the zinsser won't stick on silicone or grease so make sure you thoroughly degrease your units before painting!
