I have just come across this lovely thread, usually on the grabbit boards but the ideas and transformations of furniture etc is truly amazing, the only thing I have ever attempted was an old pine dressing table with two drawers, I sanded it all down and painted everything but the top in eggshell and am really quite proud of it but I have been reading about folks "waxing" the finished paintwork? what with please? I am def going to make this thread one of my haunts, tho may lurk for a little while to get some ideas if that is ok??
I usually wax the finish with beeswax (smells lovely too), but any furniture polish will do - not in a spray can of course. Other than that, a couple of coats of varnish, you can use the water based stuff, but put an extra coat on.
(Varnish I mean, don't make yourself too warm :D)
    Normal people worry me.

  • Okay, i am going to try this again.

    This was the table before.

I know there are a zillion of these, done all the time. It's nothing new. We needed a dining table though and i liked this one in IKEA:

Couldn't afford that, so bought the one i have from a charity shop for £15 an painted it. No posh paint here, just Sanctuary from Homebase cause it was buy one get one free. I did it chalk white.

When my mum came with me to pick it up from the shop and i told her i was painting it she said, "Oooh, are you going to distress it as well?" I replied that i wouldn't bother cause the kids would give it a genuine distressed finish in no time. :D

Not sure what to do with my chairs now though. I am watching a few retro style ones on the auction site that i can paint and recover.

That is lovely - well done indeed - could you not do the same to your chairs - they would look terrific too!

I have managed to pick up a farmhouse wooden chair at a car boot. It's cost me £2 and really sturdy.

It has been painted white and although it looks really good 'shabby chic'd' I would like to strip it back to it's natural state.

How would I go about doing this?
