It was a program about a black family that moved in next door to a white family. They are both racist and use words that probably wouldn't be allowed on TV these days (eg nig-nog and honky).
The joke was that the white guy set out to undermine the black guy but the black guy would come out on top.
I didn't find it funny but as I was about 6 when it came off the air I don't think I was the target audience. I very vaguely recalled it from the time and I used to work with a girl that thought it was the funniest thing ever.
People criticise it for being racist. TBH I think they both give as good as they get but what do I know. I wouldn't watch it if it was on TV because I find it extremely unfunny but then I find most sitcoms pretty unfunny.0 -

I have seen all of them, and watched them in the last decade. They are pretty comical however the majority of the humour is at the expense of Eddie, the white man. The interesting aspect is the relationships between the two women and the two men. The two women get on, the men hurl insults at each other. Indeed you could argue the comedy says as much about relations between the genders as it does about race.
It was something of its time, certainly, but did echo what was going on in society and was far more amusing and relevant than the LWT Uncle Tom sitcom, The Fosters.
As for this thread. I do not get the attacks on Marklv for simply objecting to the creation of what appear to be non-jobs, or at least extremely well paid roles to simply tick boxes (hardly a surprise that someone as unthinking as ninky rolls up to defend them). marklv may have personal bigotries, everyone does, however to use them as a stick to beat him for making a valid point is cheap and rather typical."There's no such thing as Macra. Greg Dyke, then director general, put in place the targets after branding the corporation as "hideously white" when spotting just one black face among 80 guests at the management Christmas party.
Dyke had planned for a voluntary programme to have 12.5 per cent of all staff and 7 per cent of senior management from BME groups by the start of 2008.
By the end of last year only 10.9 per cent of the corporation's total workforce came from ethnic minorities, only marginally up from 10 per cent at the end of 2003.Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

He is being attacked not because he is (rightly) pointing out non-jobs. He is being attacked because elsewhere on this forum he vigorously defends the public sector (seeing as how he is one of the beneficiaries of its cavalier approach to spending our tax). He only pops up to attack its excesses when it applies to very specific non-jobs aimed at the minorities that he hates.
Check his other recent posts. Anti-immigation (but only if it's coloured immigration), anti-jewish and now, it seems, a homophobe too.0 -

A politically correct publicity stunt which is completely unenforceable, impracticable and totally meaningless.
The type of pathetic gesture that typifies BBC management and reinforces my belief that it should be privatised.0 -

the bbc doesn't always get it right and some of their output is dross. but we would lose most of the very best programming being made in this country if the bbc goes. i also believe it would drive the quality of stuff being produced by other broadcasters down as they would no longer have to compete with the bbc.
you seriously hear some scary stuff in the independent and commercial sector ("black people don't rate"...one example) and we need the bbc to keep that in check. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

The BBC is an industrial oxygen thief - it sucks the life and vitality out of broadcasting by consuming vast quantities of money and smothering competition.
It's impossible to say what the broadcast media would be like if the BBC weren't richly subsidised to trickle its liberal weltanschauung into the public's ear - but it is clearly nonsense to claim, as some do, that the BBC is the only organisation working to the highest standards.
Recent years have seen a growing consensus that some of the brightest, sharpest, programming has emerged from the USA (HBO in particular), while the BBC has sunk into a morass of mindless 'reality TV' and featherweight celebrity tosh.0 -

but it's not competing with the commercial stations for the same revenue. the broadcast world is still highly competitive and quite possibly would be even more so (not less) if it were not for the bbc.
are you saying there is no reality tosh on the commercial channels? Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
are you saying there is no reality tosh on the commercial channels?
No. He's saying that we expect the populist tosh on the commercial channels and that we expect better from the BBC. Sadly they are not delivering.
They have the luxury of not having to fight for private revenues, yet the squander their resources on pap.
We fulfil our side of the bargain by supporting them; they, sadly, let down their side.
So I'm struggling to see why we as consumers should continue to tolerate it. If, on the other hand, they stood behind their mandate to produce top quality programing instead of getting into ridiculous side issues like buying Lonely Planets, I would be more than happy to see it maintained as a public broadcaster.0
