Mike - silly question - why do you want a smartphone?
Yep, it's a bit of a leap to go from never having used a smartphone to buying the most powerful smartphone on the market. Are you sure it's not overkill for your needs?

  • An iPhone might be up your street, they're meant to be pretty straightforward, yet still very good and feature-rich

Hi Ringo and Poppy. Thank you for your replies. i've actually decided to get a smartphone for fun. i thought that i've been using this old phone for some time and have always envied my friends when they show me their iPhones and what it can do. Could you believe it that i've wanted to get an iPhone for almost a year and the half now but never actually got it because i thought it is too expensive. but, now, I think that i should just treat myself and get a smartphone and might as well get the latest one in the market. again, i've been trying to decide between the iPhone 4 and Desire HD but am now more inclined to go for the desire because it is more reasonably priced and quite a few people mentioned that the IPhone does not offer much more for the extra money paid. I actually also went to the Apple store today and saw that the iPhone 4 is GBP599 sim free. i wouldn't mind actually paying the 599 but it has to offer something special, something extra which i can't seem to find when reading reviews or getting other's opinion. should i just buy the iPhone 4 because it is easier to use? i am just worried about the signal issues and also the 'yellow screen' problem which the iPhone had when it was launched.

i'll most likely be using the phone to make calls, and browse the internet so that i would get too bored while waiting for the next train or bus. i'd also visit some forums and sometimes like to copy and save images from the internet. i know that the iPhone has this function but can the HTC do this too? can i later transfer the saved images to my laptop? Please could someone help me with this question?

I also like the function on smartphones which allow us to store reference books etc on the phone. this will be very useful for me to check or look up things. also, with the internet, i could also always look online for the latest update on a particular topic.
basically, i'll use the phone for the above mostly. anything else that the phone offers, which i eventually learn to use will be a bonus and a new experience for me.
  • Best thing to do is to try it in a shop. Remember, if you buy your handset separate to a contract, you loose the customer services aspect. Eg. My wife's phone is broke, i'm about to phone Three to discuss how to possibly fix it - if i can't, they'll send me a bag and it'll get sent off and repaired.

Would you get that if you just bought your phone from play.com? Nope

Thank you Ringo. I am thinking of getting the phone from PC world. i assume that if the phone is faulty, i'll then bring it in to pc world for them to help to sort the phone out? also, is there a warranty from HTC itself? if only they had a HTC physical shop.
hump, i really don't know now which phone to get, maybe i should get the iPhone instead of the HTC so that if there's a problem i can go to the Apple store to complaint or ask for assistance?
  • Ive never had a phone on contract before and will be new to getting cashback as well and interested in the deal that Ringo got for the HTC HD Desire but all i find on e2save is the 24 month contract deal rather than the 18 month one.

The 18 month deal seems to have gone up to £30 per month now :(
