GP's rarely prescribe tricyclics as a first-line treatment for moderate depression though, even if there is difficulty with sleep.
Yes, SSRIs are normally first-line - typically citalopram. But as melancholly says it doesn't really matter.
I lost track long ago of when and what the OP was diagnosed with, when they thought they were ill, who they saw about it, whether it's a recurrence and what the university is actually saying. All of these are factors that would have to have been understood and presented coherently to form any kind of successful appeal.0 -
sertraline 50mg look it up!!0

Improvement with Sertraline may not be seen for several days to a few weeks. You should expect to keep taking it for at least several months.
Sertraline is prescribed for major depressive disorder—a persistently low mood that interferes with everyday living. Symptoms may include loss of interest in your usual activities, disturbed sleep, change in appetite, constant fidgeting or lethargic movement, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, difficulty thinking or concentrating, and recurrent thoughts of suicide.0 -
If your depression has lifted so miraculously, I can only assume that is was not that bad in the first place. Also, sertraline is not one of the more sedating AD's, in fact some patients take it in the morning and are able to function through the day. I digress ...
Are you now able to understand why your appeal has failed? Have you spoken to the Admissions Tutor for the course that you wish to change to?Gone ... or have I?0 -
it is actually...are you a GP????
yes and all places are full at 4 differant uni's on all related transferable courses. Like I said, I could have obtained a place earlier on but could not do so whislt appealing at my current uni.
My whole life is at this new city and uni and no to mention a years paid for acxcomodation therfor you can understand my priority was to sort out (appeal with them 1st) before starting a course elssewhere.0 -
then i'd add ringing the accommodation provider to your urgent list of people to contact!:happyhear0

I have, the contract is not void until someone else takes my place. However, it is a house with my friends, no locks on bedroom doors etc. I have one of the bigger rooms. If i did not take this room then my friend would want to have it, naturally i cannot refuse to let him have it.this would leave me with the smallest room that no student looking for accomodation would choose to live in, with people they do not know.
also becuase of the type of contract we have my friends have to agree that this person can live with them.0 -

DMG does have a point. Depression doesn't just go like that. With my last episode (the non-medication induced one) that lasted for about 2 months.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I have read through all of this thread with interest.
On the one hand, I can see it from most point of view- you went about it the wrong way.
But you asked for help, and all I can see is people telling you what you *should* have done, not helping you decide what you *can* do.
The intricacies of your illness such as meds, etc, are not relevant. I have had mental health problems in the past. I completely understand how difficult it is to ask for help- and while it was not the most sensible thing to do, it is still understandable that you did not go to your doctor in time. Mental illness does not always stay on an even keel- some days you feel like the most miserable person on earth, other days you feel 'ok'. I am also a student. There is so much pressure and sometimes I think it is easier to say 'Argh, I cant take the pressure, im going to hide and pretend it's all gone away'.
Anyway- have you thought of moving home for a bit(if that is an option) or working and waiting a bit, and then applying for a 2nd year in a related course either where you live or somewhere new? This university may be a lost cause, they sound very decided. Or you could pursue the OIA thing, but that sounds like a lot of hassle for something that may well fail.
I hope you get this sorted- nobody asks for this stuff to happen, and whether you made some bad choices or not, a person shouldn't be punished for asking for help (eventually!)
I also wanted to add, I thought it was very wrong of that unicorn person to imply that you failed because you spelt a few words wrong and feels you are therefore academically challenged. This may be a public forum, but it doesn't take much to have some manners. If my mother heard me speak like that to somebody in person she would be horrified.
Take care.0
