  • I guess it's one reason for the Swiss not joining the EU.

They sheltered Nazi SS wealth for ages - and probably still do.

They're not too fussy about where the cash came from though, worth remembering if you ever become a dodgy politician or dictator...

I certainly wouldn't deposit the money with a local branch, my whole town would know in half an hour.
An Internet account Smile or Cahoot, would be the way to go, with no written statements sent to your home address.
Would have to figure round the cash/credit/debit card thingy tho.An accommodation address perhaps.
  • I know someone who opened a safe deposit box with RBOS. They had to have an account open with the branch that the box was located. They put a large amount of cash and jewellery in the box and the staff did not check what was placed in the box.

Can any confirm about Premium Bonds - can they be traced by IR?

WHen it comes to safe deposit boxes, it's worth noting this from the British Bankers' Association Joint Money Laundering Steering Group::

"4. Use of bank safety deposit boxes

    Facts

A law enforcement investigation centred on the suspicious behaviour of a bank customer who appeared to be exchanging old, outdated banknotes for a new series of banknotes. The suspect appeared to be storing the old banknotes in one of the bank's safety deposit boxes.

The suspect received social security payments and had no other identifiable legitimate income.

Further enquiries revealed that the suspect had an extensive criminal history and had recently purchased a motor vehicle with a large amount of cash and owned a number of high value real estate properties.

    Results

The investigation established that the suspect was involved in drug cultivation in the houses that he had purchased using the proceeds of his drug trafficking activities. The suspect was using the bank's safety deposit facilities to store cash obtained from the sale of the illegal drugs and also to store jewellery purchased with the same proceeds.

    Lessons

This example illustrates that a complicated money laundering scheme is not always necessary to integrate illegal proceeds back into the circulation."

Several other cases related to prostitution and other crimes are also noted with respect to safe deposit boxes, so anyoen contemplating this should be aware that bank staff are expected to note unusual activity, just as for other types of transaction.

I believe Messrs Backgarden Bank have recently produced a new best buy in this area offering a splendid 0% gross (0% net, 0% AER).

If memory serves, conditions for opening include purchase of torch, spade and pond-liner-grade plastic sheeting.

Their opening hours are roughly midnight to 2 a.m.

Yes and their local branch at UnderMattress offer similar rates and more amenable opening hours. However there is some doubt as to their security procedures.

Why didn't I think of that?

Blimey after 2 years of inactivity on here for several reasons i finally clocked some off the posts to this reply and felt the need to reply just incase anyone is still around.

No not at all am i trying to commit fraud of any sort!

Well, just to update you all... im still waiting for compensation after my No Fault Accident so no large amount received yet!

Not worried about the Inland Revenue as they will automatically be paid what is owed by my Solicitor.

Not worried about DWP and benefits will be repayed whats owed automatically by Solicitor and 3rd Party! So im not cheating the Tax Payer!
Give me credit, after paying very large amounts of tax when i was in a very good paying engineering job i deserve a little help back from the government!
Not my fault that an idiot decided to cause an accident which has changed my life!
I don't like being on benefits but i have no choice!

At the time of writing this and i still suffer memory loss and struggle at times to explain what im really after as i feel at times im always confused.

The request to see if their was an account out there was to pay any monies received from my compensation into this account that would of given me considerable time to get myself in order and pay of creditors slowly and accurately.

Hope this clarifies things, as said i my intentions was not to be a CHEAT of create FRAUD! please!
