have AOL actually reported it to BT ??

BT can do a "one shot check" that looks at any faults/breaks on the line over the last few weeks , it can pinpoint if there are problems with the line or exchange end

  • From the look of that you have a short phone line which has been experiencing a lot of problems (as you have said). The BTw DLM routines have increased your target noise margin to its maximum 15dB which is why you are getting less than maximum sync.

I'd have laid odds that the problem is down to you having so many self installed extensions but if it still isn't stable in the test socket try changing the filter you are (presumably) still using for another one. If it remains unstable it will probably be a line problem but getting AOL to call out BT is going to be difficult as their TS is low grade and just follows scripts so they will not understand the problem.

A properly fitted filtered faceplate would remove problems caused by poor extension wiring but it can't fix a line problem.

    Good Luck. You'll need it.

They are not self installed, I had them all hard wired by a telephone engineer about 4 years ago when we moved in.

ETA AOL are terrible, they told me as long as the router lights up its working!!!

I'd be very surprised if the problem gets fixed with a new router.

If the extensions are all hard wired and your router is located near to the master then fitting a filtered faceplate will eliminate the need for extra filters and is a very simple job. Check the earlier link for some instructions on what has to be done.

If it really is still unstable when connected to the faceplate using different filters then the way forward is to persist with AOL to get the line checked. If they refuse or continue messing you around then migrate away to a decent ISP (e.g. Zen).

Had an engineer here on wednesday - adsl connection was dropping to lower speeds every day. Line tested ok but they knew there were problems. Engineer said hardly ever a filter problem (we only have one socket) and that most people didn't even know they had adsl problems!
In the past we've been advised to change filter many times.
Was a dodgy connection in the "cabinet" -on an 8MB old contract (with unlimited d/l's) -been solid at 8 since.
In the past tried 4 routers!

Had it plugged into the "test" socket all day, nothing except router plugged in, no phone no sky.
Hasn't gone down & normally (or rather recently) it would have.
I'm using the old filter (as its the only one I have until I buy some).

    So what does that mean?

    Wiring problem on an extension?
    Need filters?
Guess the router must be OK?

I guess the best thing to do is buy one of those new faceplates that eliminate the need 4 filters.

Looked at one in B&Q today, but it had a flat shape & my BT socket is the split front type where just the bottom comes off.

Try adding just one extension/device at a time for now and it might aid in finding the source of problem.
It seems prob is at your end from your last post.
