I've been having connection problems lately & keep getting chucked off BB.

I have a netgear router & AOL is my supplier (in contract till Aug 11).

I have 3 phone sockets, 2 upstairs with sky boxes pluged into them & one downstairs with DECT phone, sky & router. I have 1 ADSL filter on the downstairs socket. The man in Maplin told me you didn't need filters for sky boxes (this set up has been this way in this house since we moved in over 4 years ago & been trouble free).

AOL said as long as the router lights up its unlikely to be the router thats at fault & I should change my filters.

Do I need 3?

I've heard you don't need them for routers or sky boxes, that would mean I don't need any????

Should I buy the cheapest on Ebay or do they vary?
How do I know for sure my router is not the problem?

Thank you:A

you need adsl splitters on all sockets, the sky boxes do dial out so can cause the connection to drop. I have them on all sockets including the one for my alarm system

I've also had faulty splitters cause drop out and drag the speed down

    What ones should I buy?

Should I buy cheap ones from Ebay?

buy good one's , cheapest is not always best

have you tried plugging the router/splitter staright into the BT test socket

    up2.gif

undo the 2 small screws on the front of the main socket, pull the front down as shown above and plug direct into the soket behind (eliminates ALL your internal wiring)

if that stays stable then connect it all back up and go and disconnect the sky boxes from the extensions and see if it stays up

Your best bet would would be to buy a filtered faceplate. That would filter everything and also isolate the ring wires on your extensions.....

The man in Maplin was an idiot.

I saw those on ebay, I was going to ask about those.

Do I need 1 of those & 2 filters upstairs?

Just one of those & no filters downstairs?

    3 of those?

Are they easy to fit or do you have to be a phone engineer? My DH is very handy by telephone sockets have zillions of little wires don't they?

    wilkos do some for £4.99

forgot to say , test the faceplate with a new splitter (not the current one)

phone line is only 2 wires so 2 for the phone part and 2 for the adsl part, there should be at least 4 wires in the extension cable

You only need the one filtered faceplate and need no additional filters so long as your extensions are hard wired. If you have plugin extensions then they can go into a doubler to the phone side although as you have two that would be messy whichever way you did it. It is a DIY job. You need a Krone tool to push the wires in - using a blade may damage the connector - a disposable tool should cost no more that £1 - Wilko or B&Q maybe or probably ADSLNation carry them if you order your faceplate from them.

Quite apart from having unfiltered Sky boxes the ring wires in extensions act as antennas for RF noise and need to either be disconnected at the master socket or the entire extension filtered from the master socket end.

I seriously doubt that they are any better than the junk ones from eBay.

Either use the filters that come with decent brand ADSL routers or buy from a specialist supplier such as ADSL Nation or Clarity. All filters are most certainly not the same. This is not snake oil like HDMI and audio cables - it is a fact.
