There are 1.9M single parents caring for 3M children.

Around 50% are not working. that is 2.5M of the total straight away.

Is that all? I'd have though the real figure is higher.
That said, working within the system it is my belief (& talking to DWP staff recently, a more commonly held belief than I thought) that one of the larger areas of fraud, is people claiming as lone parents, when they are actually co-habiting.

There's also 6 million carers in the Uk...

How many unpaid carers & the like do we have that aren't counted in these figures?
In my view, carers are way under-represented in the system, & also under-acknowledged.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

An employer will pay a worker what they are worth to him, why should he have to pay any more than he wants to? The employee always has the option to resign if someone else is prepared to pay more.

The highest earning people I know have never been in a union.

so you disagree with the equal pay act, do you? for years (and even now) women have been paid less because of sexist attitudes and because employers could get away with it. the only way to change that is through collective action, not individual action which doesn't change the structures and regulations of the way you are having to work.

what would stop employers in a recession from making people work an 18 hour day for 50p an hour if those people were desperate enough and had no choice?

attitudes like yours lead to sweat shop situations, abuse of domestic staff etc etc. because of course some people will always be vulnerable if they aren't protected by a union.

I did it on a all thing being equal.
But I dare say you are more likely to be working if you only have one child (due to costs) than more than one.
So it could be nearer 3m.

I don't see it as a choice in the same way you do. Some people who want to get pregnant don't, and some people who don't want to get pregnant do.

It's not entirely within an individual's control.

It really needs to be taken back to if you live on benefits you should have enough to survive (accomodation and food), you shouldn't even be able to afford a TV unless given to you (nevermind the current 40" LCD minimum benefits seem to give).

If you want something in life go and work for it.

  • It really P's me off that everyone who is unfortunate enough to need help from the government is branded a thief, scrounger or liar:mad: - yes there are some who sponge, but there are a lot more who don't.
If they want to cut benefits stop paying it to European's and other ethnic people who come here and get everything handed to them without having ever paid a penny into the system.:mad::mad:

Oh and yes I am disabled but I worked from the age of 15 for 30 years and have never had to have state help before and I hate that I need to now.
I need new knees but have to wait because the NHS say I'm too young so I have to wait until basically the knees collapse  and I have tried to get jobs and been turned down

What if you're old and you didn't pay many contributions because you were bringing up a family and caring for elderly relatives?

What if unemployment is very high in your area and you can't get a job?

What if your pitiful education hasn't equipped you for one?

What if you have a long term illness or disability , or care for someone else who does?

What if your partner ups and leaves you with three kids and childcare is more money than you could possibly earn?

These people and in some cases their children should just barely be able to survive? Really? For how long?

It really is not difficult to stop oneself getting pregnant to a pretty high level of certainty, what is easy is not not be careful. Too many people take no responsibilty and expect others to support them and their children.
