Is wanting a large family so bad?

Options
Just wanted to gauge some opinions on this one. We already have 4 kids and have struggled mightily with money for past 18mths. However have now sorted ourselves out - higher income, realistic budget and have curbed the spending. But still have approx 6k of debt that is being paid off - all up to date though but managed through a DMP. I have also managed to save 4.5K in ISA's for emergency fund as we now live on one salary so have some security. Am now intending to save for early debt repayment.

So onto the question - I have 4 kids and want more....5-6 to be exact. People seem to imply that this might be irresponsible - what do others think?

I don't think you're irresponsible but hats off to you as I am just about coping with spreading myself somewhat thinly between three!!!

I think if you and your partner can support them, without benefit handouts, not incuding child benefit, wtc, ctc.. then ignore what negative things are said.

if on the other hand you wanted lots of kids but expect the tax payer to pay for them, then i wouldn't like to type here what i will be thinking.

Basically, yes I agree with the above. That is up to you to judge whether you have the wherewithall to support more children, and the time to give each one. Rather, than as a way of acquiring money from the State, because you can't afford, but have them anyway.
Personally, I can't imagine why you would want more. I only have to hear some 'kid' scream or shreek (and why do young girls shreek) in a supermarket and I feel the need to rush off in the opposite direction!

No1catman its not always the girls that shreak my little boy is my squeeler, though thankfully he doesnt squeel in the supermarkets lol
It is better to stay silent and be thought a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt. :p

Of all things we give a child, our words must be carefully wrapped.

If that's what you want and you can support them, then go for it! It's your life. I come from a large family myself and that is what I wanted for myself too.

Over population is the elephant in the room.
For environmental reasons it is highly irresponsible to have more children.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

Have as many kids as you wish sweetheart, it's your business, no-one elses...

    good luck

  • Surely it's not just about the money?

How are you going to find the time to give each child individual attention? Or are you just going to let them mither each other instead of you?

How are you going to deal with different wants across the age gap? 6 kids 18 months apart means that when the 11 year old wants help with their homework, the 2 year old wants feeding... which of them are you going to go to first?

Don't get me wrong, I love my siblings. But, as a child it would have been nice to have a bit of adult attention for me, not just being one of a crowd - especially as I got older, when it was assumed I was self sufficient & the little ones needed more looking after...
