I would definitely reccomend buying a 350D body only, and then getting some good lenses with the extra cash.
Don't be put off by the list of accessories costing £900 - these can be bought as and when you need them, depending on the type of photography that interests you. I am considering buying a flash gun, but only after having the 350D for a year - I've spent my cash on better lenses, and use available light.
IMHO I think the jump from the 300D to the 350D was greater than that of the 350D to 400D. The only thing that would swing it for me would be the larger LCD display.0 -
I've just replaced my Canon 300D with a 400D.
In my opinion the picture quality is better, even at high ISOs, the autofocus is significantly better and the LCD screen is incredible.
Of course I have a large collection of good lenses (not just the kit lens) to compare and all have produced much better shots.
Benefits:
The extra pixels is much more significant in the 300-400D upgrade.
The download speed is around 30x quicker
Autofocus is more accurate and quicker
LCD screen provides a fantastic image
Speed and number of continous shots even at high res/raw
Downsides:
Its a lot smaller and a little cramped
I like the top LCD on the 300d (although to be fair to the 400d battery life seems as good and that's with smaller batteries).
I'd definitely recommend the jump from 300-400, I held out on the 300-350 as I didn't think I could justify it, I definitely wouldn't upgrade from 350-400 as the changes aren't that significant. But there's no way I'd buy a 350 today with the 400 so cheap, I'd say the advantages of AF and screen alone make it worthwhile to spend the small difference - I've spent £200-400 on additional lenses, which would only be tickled by the saving from buying the 350D.
Anyone who suggests the 350 is better than the 400 must either have a dud camera/lens or a very poor photographer. On most counts the 350 and 400 are inseparable on quality and usage.
I even think the pixel count does matter in some circumstances, I've had situations where the subject was so far away, a major crop is required in which case 25% more pixels would have helped.

Jessops price matched the Dixons website for me today so got the black 400d kit (camera and lens) for £509, which as of yesterday was the cheapest I could find it from a UK online retailer. It was good to have a play with the camera before I bought it too.

Has anyone looked at the Cannon Clearance outlet on e-bay? I got my 300 or 350d (can't remember which one it was as I've since sold it at a profit) a year ago and got a stupidly good price on a body - about £280

Anyone know any deals to get the 400D with the kit lens cheapest?
I noticed jessops has it in stock now, but I want to know if there are any jessops deals currently or if they will have any special offers soon? I'm going to order one within the next 2 weeks!0 -
