I have to say this camera isnt exactly that good in comparason with 300/350D.

I run a photography website and forum and few of my members have said this camera isnt as good as they thought. The feel of it is about the same as the 350D which is good but compared to the 30D, the 30D still wins hands down. (i cant put the domain as it would be advertising but it is called wdpics)(i hope thats ok to mention as its handy for people to know where they can get photography advice and help and information)

I would go for a 300/350D more than a 400D but i would look at the Nikon D80 more than i would at the 350D.

Its down to specification really, what glass you have.

If you dont know alot about DSLR, then you have to realise that your body, you will change within a few years probably. The body you will change, the glass (lens) you will not. Buy the best of glass, ie, dont spend £100 on a piece of glass (sigma 70-300) go for a better piece for example (70-300 sigma APO or Nikkor 70-300 VR) as these pieces of glass will give you a better overall image.

Please note though, Think about this camera before you buy it and look at the long term. Can you afford to spend £550 on this now, and then buy accessories like flashgun (£300) case (£50) bag (£80) tripod (£75) monopod (£50) and then you need to look at glass because you cant just use the 18-55, you will need a few other glasses. 70-300 is a good one to get for zoom (£200) 50mm 1.8 good portrate lens (£100) Memory card - you need atleast 1GB but dont just have one, if one fails, you will be stuck so have 2 - so you have spent so far just over £900 on accessories you will use and need before you have bought the camera.

Dont buy cheap tripods, yes sure you can get them for £20 but they are rubbish, cheap and light, and you wont beable to use them. The cheapest tripod should cost you about £40 and go for a brand name such as velbon, manfrotto, etc...

Do remember though, you will probably use these accessories more often than you think - flashgun is the most important *yes there is onboard flash but its rubbish* you will defo need tripod, bag, flashgun, and glass.

Its an investment but you have to be sure you will use the camera alot to spend such a high amount and also remember, if you go with Canon or Nikon, you have bought in to that family, so your next camera will HAVE to be of the same make, ie you buy Nikon D80 now, your next camera will have to be another nikon as you have bought all the accessories for nikon fit and canon have different fittings so wont fit.
Never do things tomorow when you can do them today.

But you havent said why the 350d is better than the 400d at all ?

The camera is getting fairly well recieved over in the dp forums and fred miranda.

Ive had a 20d for the last 2 years, and have got the L glass, various lenses etc, and the 400d isnt far off the 20d at all, the only grumble is the body size.

whats the link to your forums?

There is a very good reason why forums such as these get good reviews from the forum admin but for legal reasons i can not say but im sure you can work it out. We have a non bias non paid view of equipment - we are just starting to build up the review section and tutorial section but these shoudl be sorted very soon.

Personally this 400D offers little of real value over the 350D. A very disappointing release from Canon to combate the new models from other brands with features such as anti-dust. The mp increase is irrelevant. I would look at the 350D if price is key factor, or the 30D or new Nikon D80 if you want better build, features and handling.

I bought the 350D a month ago and was well pleased. My friend was impressed by the 350D and bought the 400D (had to go one better!) and was so dissapointed with the results that he returned it.
