Im going to try out my first SC tomorrow, got some diced turkey, onions, garlic and potatoes, mushrooms - not sure what I can make out of that! lol

Do you have a tin of tomatoes - chopped or ordinary would do?

I would gently sweat the onions and chopped garlic then add the mushrooms for a couple of minutes. Put into the SC. Then I'd add the diced turkey - if necessary cut it up a little bit smaller and a tin of tomatoes, some dried mixed herbs and maybe a chicken stock cube. Maybe a little bit of chilli, paprika or cayenne pepper - not much though, just enough to be able to taste it :D. If you had some peppers, a few pieces chopped would be good as well.

If the turkey meal looks a little watery, try thickening with some 'slaked cornflour' for about half an hour before serving (or add some chicken gravy granules).

I wouldn't put the potatoes in there - but maybe cook them separately - perhaps jacket spuds and serve the turkey concoction over them.

To tell you the truth, this meal can cook so quickly that I often do it in the wok (or deep skillet pan) rather than use the slow cooker.

    Hi Smarties!

There is usually a couple of recipes in the book that comes with the cooker!! I usual chuck everything in and leave for 3-4 hours!! I do usually brown any meat though as it keeps the flavour in it (and stops saugages going soggy - hate slimy sausage skin!)

    Have a good weekend!

    Thank you!
  • I've just bought a SC and am still getting to grips with it. It's a "crockpot" one (on offer in Costco). I cooked Nigella's lamb and date tagine before Christmas on the hob, which was lovely, but now I'm wondering if I could do this in the SC? She says to simmer on low on the hob for 2 hours. How long would I need to leave it in the SC for? (mine has low and high options).

    Thanks
  • I'd love to invest in a slow cooker, but the OH is having trouble believing it would save money on our electricity bill (we have no gas) I think I remember someone saying that new ones use a lot more power than the older ones?

Does anyone have a rough idea on how much it costs on average to cook a meal- averagely? lol We'd be looking at a 6.5 (ish) litre capacity.

Any help gratefully appreciated by a total SC virgin.

  • Hello

    I need inspiration!

I have a slow cooker but dont feel i use it to its full potential. I have not made anything from scratch as such (i use all the colmans mixes in it! )

Tomorrow i have some nice fresh organic veggies being delivered (potatoes, carrots, leeks, parsnip, suede, carrots).

What can i make in the s/c using some of these veggies, chicken breasts or stewing steak and a very limited store cupboard? We are a family of 5 (2 adults / 3 children)

    Thank you for any ideas

  • I'm swure that someone else will give you a more comprehensive recipe, or you could check the recipe index, but With the ingredients you have mentioned. I would chop up all the a variety or some of all the veggies, to your preferrd size, then throw them in the sc, with the chopped meat of your choice, either browned in a little oil, or just as it comes. You could add a tin of chopped tomatoes, and a pinch of dried mixed veg, them leave to cook for 5-6 hrs. The meat and veg mix alone will release a fair amount of juices which can be thickened if required with 1tbsp cornflour(or plain flour) mixed with 3tbsp water.
