  • These Coleman's Season & Shake cook in the bag seasonings in the oven for 40 minutes are great. No smells. They have some curry ones as well. Also "So Juicy" do them.

    You're welcome. :)
I like a good curry. Currently watching "The Spice Men" & "Rick Stein's India".
  • Hello everyone,

I've just recently moved out into my own place and it's my first experience living alone so I'm doing all I can to try and get myself started saving money on electricity (and everywhere else) wherever possible. I have a key meter for my electricity and fortunately I've also got economy 7 hours with this.

To take advantage of this I was gifted a slowcooker by my auntie, which I got really excited about, A Crock-Pot Saut! Traditional Slow Cooker (4.7L). Unfortunately I decided to quickly look at reviews of this and I've found things quite worrysome... There are alot of reviews meantioning burning and this not really being a "slow cooker" as it actually heats things up quite fast (this is ignoring the other factors I read about). My intention was to use the slow cooker to slowly cook through the night using my cheaper electricity times. Unfortunately I'm affraid after hearing those two factors I dont want to go asleep and wake up to lots of burnt food or maybe worse.

So, after all that here is my question, or more questions, has anyone had experience with this slow cooker? Is it safe for what I described I intended to do with it? Or is it better that I look into another slow cooker?

Sorry if I'm handling the forum etiquette wrong here, or posting this in the wrong place as this is my first post in the forum.

    Thank you all in advance,

    Danimono

My recipie book says to fry/brown/start the cooking process on the hob for EVERYTHING which is a bit annoying as who wants to be frying onions at 7am!!?? I guess I could fry everything the night before but as the whole point of getting a slow cooker was so I don't have to use my dodgy cooker and keep energy bills down, it seems to defeat the object really!
Replying to an old question, but, fried onions will keep in the fridge for a few days if sealed in a plastic foodbox, if you can find a convenient time to fry some up whle you're cooking other things. Or, if you're lucky enough to have a freezer, then do a batch fry up and freeze them in portions.

If you freeze them, you can pull out a portion the night before to defrost it, then lob it into the SC in the morning.

Can I cook a leg of lamb in the slow cooker?

I am worried I won't have enough time to cook it in the morning for lunch (we have a small oven and lots to go in there tomorrow!). I would normally just try it and see, but as my mother is coming for lunch and is pretty direct with her opinion on my cooking, I am worried it will be disgusting! I've only ever wrapped in foil after rubbing with olive oil and seasoning and cooked it on low for 4-5 hours before.

I find it goes stringy in the slow cooker to be honest but you will have some lovely gravy.

Why not put it in the oven overnight on a low heat....
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

What sort of heat setting would you suggest? I have a fan electric oven?
