Hello Sam, I use about 2-3 heaped tablespoons cornflour (or ordinary), and stir it around the vegetables at the start, before adding any liquids. It thickens it up nicely.

Thanks Sublime.. I was worried about adding too much flour in case it affected the taste, but I'll give that a try next time.

To avoid the flour affecting the taste, thicken a good half an hour before serving.

Also if you are browning the meat before putting into the slow cooker coat in seasoned flour before frying. Or as sublime suggested coat the vegatables.

  • Hi guys,

    What a good thread!!

I have been trawling the internet to try and find a slow cooker, veggie/vegan nut roast - but can't find one anywhere. Does anyone have one - please?!

I am a recent veggie, and can only cook edible food in a slow cooker!

    Thank you :-)

  • With regards to thickening, you could always use a few gravy granuals (be carefull not to make it too salty though) or whisk in some instant mash which I use and is great. But like Rikki said all thickening is best added 30-60 mins beforehand.

  • Hi all,

I've picked up a couple of meaty bargains from Mr T, but can't find anything about how to cook them. I now it must be on here somewhere, but have been looking for a couple of days and want to get cooking!

I've got a nice pork leg (2kg) and a pack of pork boneless streaky slices (720g). I guessed these can both be cooked (seperately) in the SC, but if anybody out there has any cooking times/recipe suggestions I would be very grateful.

    Thanks x

Hi Minniepoos. I'm not a big pork fan but here is the pork list from the complete slow cooker collection

Also if you look in the thread - in my slow cooker today and search that thread for pork you should get some ideas. Also slow cooker the recipe collection

    Hope that helps x

Hi.I have a new slow cooker as I needed a larger one.I found that the new one is much hotter than the old one used to be.If I put things on high I can see them simmering away.I now cook things for much less time than with the previous slow cooker. It might be worth reducing the cooking time to see if that helps.

I'm so glad I read this thread, my old slo cooker got broken after 21 years so I treated myself to a HUGE 6.5 litre Rachel Alan one and I keep saying to my hubby I love it but its not as slow as the other one, its cooking things so much faster and is so hot, like you say I can see things simmering which I didn't before, even on low its so much quicker, its amazing how different it is to my old one , I think its going to take a bit of getting used to but I will say 6.5 litre slo cookers are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo big , really great for a family

Does anyone know why milk based items stick to the sideof my SC and how to prevent it?

It doesnt matter if it is porridge, rice pudding and the likes it always glues itself to the side of the SC. i have tried greasing before use and still no joys. Even stiriing through whilst cooking does not help.

The Rachel Allen S.C is 340watts (highest one ive seen) I have a Breville which is 220-240watts and can reach boiling on high...lowest wattage ive seen is the little Argos value one at only 90watts.
Most SC have the wattage stamped on the bottom of the "casing" part that the crockpot sits in

PS/ Steff,do you have a breville SC too?apparantly these have a "wrap around "element that surrounds the side of the SC,rather than just under the base?
