    Weather Alert

From Wednesday onwards we have terrific weather coming in for pretty much all of us. If you have anything that you need to finally get washed, duvets, coats etc, then this is pretty much your final chance to get it done, dry and put away in quick time. I shall get our mattress protector washed and done.

I might change the meal plans slightly and get some salad stuff in beings as it's oing to be so hot.

:jHad to turn on the weather after I read this as I thought ... "bet it's not here", coolish today, rain tomorrow but Weds & Fri 20 deg with Thurs showing 22 deg:j.

Will have to go and hunt through cupboards to find something to wash - can't pass that up!:D
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

Greetings preppers hope you have had a good weekend.

Just back from the inlaws and had a good day with them. Got FIL a Bulldog snow shovel ordered off Amazon this afternoon and he will get it delivered around or just after 6 October. We are hoping that it will be delivered then and no later. Looks like Amazon have been having a run on snow shovels.

MIL helped me with a knitting problem I had and she is off to Primarni next week to get herself the 200 denier fleece tights. They had it pretty bad in Lincolnshire last year in fact they had more snow than us. We are not too worried about them because DH other brothers do not live too far away. They are doing a small amount of winter prep but nothing on the scale we have done. Motorway was busy tonight but glad to be home. Love going away to see them but it's always nice to get back.

Chirpy I'm sorry to read about your dad. 47 is no age and it seems very unfair, but medical science has come on so much in this last 20 years and they are making good breakthroughs in neuro-science and treatments as well. Keep positive - it will be a terrible worry - and have faith that he will be alright!

Thanks Kathy for recipe I shall put it into practice xxx[/QUOTE. 200 denier tights from Primark, are they childrens ones as I have never seen any in my store?,could use these as my knees get very very cold in winter.

The ones that I purchased are for adults. I don't have children so cannot tell you if they have them. They do have knee highs in for adults but I do not know the thickness of the denier.

Annie123 - they look just the ticket and there is nothing like a personal recommendation - Im going to try the latex ones too and what a dur-brain for not thinking of dyeing them - 'specially as I dyed a duvet cover on Saturday!!!
I like the sound of having an Amish pen-pal although snail mail is not my preferred method of communication. There are lots of great folks in the states who are just livin' the best they can and still doing stuff we Brits forgot about in c1950!!!!
Kathy et al - vital wheat glut is an absolute B***** to get here in the UK - I had to order it online - NONE and I mean none in any stores. I used it to make some really good vegan sausages - someone tell me how to do a link and Ill post the vid altough I think if you just google it the demo video will be thrown up - thats how I found it.
Flippin' miserable here today weatherwise (its drizling on my shed roof and therefore my piano -sad face -someone tell me where the faces are too please) and I feel just as grey inside (Ooops a song coming on?)
Am gonna have a go at my bedroom today - its insulated as much as it reasonably can be but there is a damp feel to it so Im going to have the heater on for drying purposes and try and make it LOOk warmer with a hanging.
debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)
  • Everyone taking advantage of BOGOF offers (:rotfl:i.e stockpiling loo rolls) don't forget to put them in the holder with the torn edge facing you, not the wall. You don't use as much that way and should have 150 left over after the winter!
    Normal people worry me.
  • Morning,

Well done Red Doe, SO pleased for you:j

Chirpy: Sorry to hear about your Dad. Thoughts are with you.

Hello to all the newcomers; this thread is amazing and so are all the peeps.:T

Well freezer saga has continued. Again I had no delivery on Saturday morning as promised. They tried to deliver it in the afternoon when I was out which was not the agreed time. So now I have to phone company again and give them what for. Bl))dy nusiance:mad:

Trying out my thermal socks today from L*dl. They feel more like thick tights so think they will be mostly suitable for work.

Got tealights form IK*a yesterday. It was mobbed so didn't have a chance to hunt for any bargains. Also ordered folding snow shovel off eB*y.
Got about 8 parcels to post later, all stuff I managed to sell on eB*y. So happy that someone has bought my junk:rotfl:Got about £200 so that's towards the 'Safety Savings aka If the sh*t hits the fan'.

Was roasting in bed last night. The winter duvet is working a treat. No heating on at all. House is warm enough.

Prep almost done. Still need to get in a load of cat food. Cats got wormed at weekend but I am concerned about Red Baron aka cat no.1 that she may have fleas. She has had a couple of ticks over the past weeks:eek::eek: So need to get flea medication to double check. Vet said it's near end of seaosn but we need a good frost to kill them off. I don't know:o

Anyway enough ramblings, have a great day all. :A
  • Hi Everyone.
I have not posted on here in ages and again, I am preparing for the winter months. Every day I read this thread but rarely post anything myself.. I love this thread and think that, in a previous life, I must have been a squirrel.

I agree with Rainy-Days that, for those of us who will have a few days of warm weather, now is the time to wash and get dry, perhaps for the last time this autumn, all those blankets and coats and so on. This week I will be washing all of our duvets and pillows.

Last week I came across an old double duvet and a couple of old single duvet covers. The children and I all have single beds so we have no use for a double duvet. I cut it into four squares. I cut and sewed the duvet covers to fit each square. They work perfectly as a mini duvet to keep your legs warm while watching TV. My daughter takes hers up to bed with her as an extra bit of warmth at night.

I am trying to get extras in for the pantry each time I go shopping, mostly things like..
    dried milk,
    hot chocolate,
    pasta,
    pasta sauce,
    coffee,
    tea,
    loo rolls,
    cat food,
    salt
    cereal bars
    tinned vegetables and fruit
    custard
    meatballs
    noodles
    pasta in sauce packets
    washing liquid
    toothpaste
    liquid soap
    flour
    jam
    corned beef
    kidney beans
    and soup

There are many other things on my list but that is all I can remember right now. Last year we were not caught out too badly as I had done some preparation thanks to this thread. The year before however, we were not prepared at all and when the Tesco delivery didn't turn up and wasn't going to turn up for a least a week, we found that we were in trouble.. I don't drive, I am a single Mum and have four children. I put us all on rations of the things we did have until we could get to the shops again.. Not this year though. :) we are quite prepared and could last a least a couple of weeks without going to the shops.

    Gosh! That's a new one!

I never realised that you could buy gluten to add to standard plain flour.

Can you point us to a good source, please?

How much do you have to use per (2lb) loaf? How much does it add to the cost per loaf?

    Hi long time lurker *waves*

I have bought vital wheat gluten from here to make seitan before http://www.honest-to-goodness.org.uk/index.php/vital-wheat-gluten-1kg.html?___store=default

    :D
  • Is anyone else beginning to wonder if Winter is going to be bad after all this year?
I LOVE Winter so much (I swear I have the opposite to SAD) and Snow particularly but with this Indian Summer talk and the forecast saying its going to be 25 here on Friday I am starting to fret that Winter wont be as exciting as the last 2 years!
(Which I know is good for some people) but from a selfish point of view I think I am starting to worry that Winter is going to get warmer again and we wont be able to enjoy a "real" winter again this year. Anyone else think this or anyone have any thoughts as to how it will be in the next few months? I know there was predictions of a harsh winter that i read back in June or something I am wondering if there is anything more recent?
Everything is always better after a cup of tea
