Guys I need some advice/stroke help with my hands!!! I dont know if it's because Im getting old (boo hoo) or whether it could be the drugs Im on but EVERY time I go to do anything - even get the hoovr out etc I mange to nick myself or somehow produce an irritating tiny cut which then proceeds to sting and irritatingly bleed everywhere. Drama over I NEED SOME REALLY COMFORTABLE AND STRONG gloves that I can wear almost all the time.
Rubber gloves make me very sweaty very quickly then I get little itchy blisters which eventually burst - d'you think neoprene would be just as irritating. I have those white cotton tings you get from chemists BUT they get filthy.
This is actually stopping me from doing stuff now - please rack your brains!!

    Dye them black?!!!

Maybe you ought to have a chat with your GP about it because if a tiny cut bleeds that much, imagine what would happen if you (God forbid) cut yourself badly...

I would have thought neoprene would be less annoying than rubber gloves... and less sweaty!

OT - I just had one E N O R M O U S spider come in thru my back door :eek::eek: I didn't know which way to run, grabbed the RAID spray but it kept running for my feet :eek::eek::eek::eek: So I hit it with a welly boot. Its now squashed into my back door mat in the kitchen :o I can't pick it up or I will be sick. Might have to wait until it dries up and then throw the mat away :o:o:o It was only a V cheap one anyway...

Oh I sooooooooo hate this time of year when the big ones start coming inside... I am a nervous wreck now and I bet I have nightmares tonight :(

Not sure if anyone else does this but i have started filling my hot water bottles up from the tap rather than boiling the kettle. For me they are much better as they are snuggly much quicker rather than having to wait for them to cool down a bit!

I've never filled the hot water bottle from the kettle. I worry about the bottle springing a leak. At least with hot tap water, it's hot enough to warm, but not so hot that it would scald.

Chirpychick, positive vibes sent to you and your family.

On the preparation front, I got to Primark yesterday and picked up a pair of those fleece lined tights. For some reason unknown even to myself, I only bought one pair!
I also got a really thick pair of wrist warmers and some welly socks.
The girl who served me asked if I was getting ready for winter!
  • Reading up on the preparedness challenge on http://homesteadrevival.blogspot.com/ made me think of this thread. I wish I lived in the countryside! I would love to have chickens but we aren't allowed them here and I think the dog (Jack Russell) would probably chase them. Not giving up on my vegetable garden dreams though even if my "patch" is teeny tiny!

I write to a couple of Amish ladies as pen pals - now they know how to prepare!! They all seem to be busy canning all their produce at this time of year to last all through Winter. They even make their own cough medicine and cordial drinks!

Frugal - I HATE spiders!!! I just had a Daddy Long Legs in my room and I hate those too - they just fly right at you! There isn't much that I am not scared of though. :o

Well i've made quite a big discover today - I have two wooden sheds in the garden which to be honest i've never bothered with as apparently they were used as chicken houses - until I looked in to and the biggest one has huge logs in it - and by huge they are more like tree trunks - fabbo - only problem now is how to cut them down in size. And whilst out walking the dogs earlier i noticed one of the trees branches had broken off (it was quite a size) - so i went back with my car and dragged it home (my road is isolated and you dont see a soul at weekends)!!

:jYou gotta use that fire now!;)

Would there be anything at work that would do (think you said you worked on a construction site?) - you could maybe get someone to chop them (chainsaw would be easiest) in return for something (baking, sewing etc).

Easy No-knead White or Wheat Bread

Kathy, that sounds yummy - do you know if it would work the same with oat flour (I'm wheat intolerant, love bread and really struggle to come up with anything).

    Evening peeps

looking forward to the warm weather forecast later in the week, won`t be tempted to use any heating then :D

Chirpychick - (((HUGS))) for you and your family, hope that the time for your Dads op comes around sooner than expected. You know where we are if you need a chat.

Frugal - I know what you mean about the spiders :o We`ve already had a few whoppers, would the hoover come to your rescue to get rid of the remains and then you could save the mat? If the raid is the one in the red can then spray it around the door and the spiders that cross it will die anyway, i can`t wait until spider season is over!

Not much more in the way of prep being done here, i`m working long shifts atm and i don`t have a day off for a while. I do have some more curtains to alter which will be my next job. With the forecast for the near future being so good i intend to get a few more bits and bobs done in the garden too.

    SD
Planning on starting the GC again soon :p

Have you tried latex gloves. They won't last as long as the rubber gloves but still quite sturdy. You can get the powdered ones, which won't make your hands sweat. Your local pharmacy might sell them, but for value ask them to order you a box of 100.

re spiders - when i walk my dogs i wear a baseball cap and it hangs in the porch (joins the main house to the outbuildings) with the dog leads, put it on yesterday and felt something tickling my head ...............there was a spider inside my baseball cap!! Its not hanging there anymore!
Then the night before sat on the sofa and felt something tickle my feet - the hugest spider was walking over my feet. I dont mind spiders too much which is just as well as most nights one runs across my living room rug. Got in the shower one morning, turned the shower on to then see a huge spider run down the shower curtain!
A home is not a home ..... without a dog

Hi Dawnie, just wondering if there was some reason you've decided not to use the open fire?

I used to live in a really old farm cottage (again with oil heating that I couldn't afford to use) and the open fire was my only source of heating.

I only had the fire in my lounge but it warmed the room (with doors shut) really quickly and I could then open the doors to the other parts of the house and keep the chill off them.

The heat generated helps to warm the stones that the cottages are built of and stops them getting really cold which helps a huge amount.

I completely agree. Some years ago (so can't remember prices exactly) we were in a house with only one open fire as heating. We were both at work (shifts as well!) and we ended up buying the (apparently) expensive slow-burning coke. It actually worked very well indeed and kept our bills manageable. We made up the fire twice a day, and kept a constant background heat - very comfortable. It didn't look as nice as a coal or log fire, but was much more manageable. I definitely think it's worth trying, but there are many variables.

I have thrown the mat outside and will see tomorrow!

It is the blue can one but I have sprayed it liberally by the back door both inside and out!

I usually use Indorex (flea spray) to keep nasties away but its really expensive, altho really effective as when I was using it we never had spiders...

I will have a look at the Red Raid spray! Thanks :)

    Weather Alert

From Wednesday onwards we have terrific weather coming in for pretty much all of us. If you have anything that you need to finally get washed, duvets, coats etc, then this is pretty much your final chance to get it done, dry and put away in quick time. I shall get our mattress protector washed and done.

I might change the meal plans slightly and get some salad stuff in beings as it's oing to be so hot.
Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money :D
