Red Doe so happy for you
Ive had to give up on my winter prep now
Ive run out of money - to be continued next year i guess. But i know that the prep i have done this year will save me money for years to come and hopefully next year it will be completely finished
We are in cornwall next weekend for a weeks holiday (the first in 3 years) with the inlaws and for hubbys birthday.
We have 3 fence panels to replace, 3 windows to replace cat and 3 dogs annual jabs lol and then Christmas so it feels like its all getting a bit much really.
I have started to stock my cupboards up.
We just found out my dad has a brain tumour (hence my absence), I have been absolutely devestated and now coming to terms with it all but wishing there was more i could do. He is only 47, he will need to be operated on but its a 9 month waiting list and then will need 3 months recuperation learning how to walk again and things like that so my plan is to stock up now, get the house sorted and accumulate savings so that i have the petrol to visit every day and take meals without it costing us extra. if that makes sense.
we live penny to penny now and im using this to get in real control and "grow up" and get real and im a bit sad we didnt finish all our winter prep as im sure we could have made many more savings on our gas and electricity but visiting dad and having some comforts this past couple of weeks has been more important in terms of the here and now.
I will however be winter prepping for 2012 much earlier next year and i have already learnt so much thanks to you wonderful people! I guess "rome wasnt built in a day"
Lots of love and hugs to you and your family Chirpy - Thoughts and prayers with your Dad and wishing him a speedy recovery when he eventually gets the op. He is lucky that he has age on his side
I have to say that I am appalled that there is a 9 month waiting list  That is bad.
Anyway, take care of yourself chick0 -
Chirpy - my best wishes to you and your Dad, and hope the waiting isn't too long.

The soon-to-be open fire is causing me great excitement... :j:j:j (and much financial worry:o)
Whilst at work yesterday I was out on visits and found a log - It was just abandoned and wasn't on a garden so, with a big grin, I picked it up, popped it in the boot of my car and it is now sitting in the big ugly hole in my living room as a reminder that it won't be long until I can burn it
So, that will be my first 'free heat' :T
And I popped into Ald!'s and the person behind me had one of those 3 bird roasts on the conveyor belt... I said to her that I had heard they were good and she raved about them and said that at the moment they are 1/3 off! So £6.99 instead of £9.99. I decided to pick one up for our Christmas dinner... Got it home and remembered my freezer was full to burstingSo, its been defrosting in the fridge and is now in the oven and we will live off it for the next week I expect
Plus, I will have to ask the neighbour if I can pinch some freezer space to stash another one for Xmas.
Door curtain is up (can't remember if I already said that) and my friend was supposed to come today to put 2 more rails up for me but hasn't turned up yet. Hope he hasn't forgotten...
Hope everyone is having a good weekend (whats left of it)
ETA 3 bird roast smells lovely and friend hadn't forgotten and is here putting up another rail0 -
Afternoon
Chirpy, sending you and your family hugs and our best wishes that your dad makes a speedy recovery.
In T**co's today I noticed that they are selling flannalette sheets and pillowcases, has anyone purchased these, just wondering about the quality and if they wash well?
In the same store I picked up an "out and about First Aid Kit" for 84p. This is handbag sized and contains 20 plasters, antiseptic wipes and blister plasters. It is half price and reduced to clear. Useful to have to hand.
Also got some WD40 half price, will give the door and window hinges a spray.
Happy prepping

just updating my winter list, im pretty much done with everything, ive got curtains to go up in the hall still, but need the builder to put them up for me, so other than that all my winter prep is done as mum had a good sort out and clean out of the house when she was up for a few days. its only really the christmas food shop i need to do, but thats relativly straight forward as its just the meat and veg for dinner to get.
tomato soup (i go through buckets of the stuff) still got plenty left so will see how i go and maybe buy more november time
5 x packs turkey mince - buy one extra each time i go to supermarket0 -
Hello,
Another lurker emerging from the woodwork. May I join in?
I have been reading (many of) these pages in the last few days and I must say I'm very impressed with the lovely forum and the lovely posters.
I'm fairly elderly and experienced and I hope I may be able to contribute.
In the meantime, my sincerest thoughts to Chirpy and warmest winter wishes to Red Doe.0 -

Thanks so much for looking for me.
I think i shall find an excuse to venture out and get dad and his gf and my in laws some for Christmas (perhaps one each). Very good plan.
Also it will come in handy for dad anyway if he wants to sit in the garden after the op and things like that so a wise investment!
We just went out for lunch with my mum to the pub, her and my dad arent together and havent been for 10 years but she was pretty cut up actually more than i think i thought she would be.
Its hubbys birthday next week so i think we are trying to put aside our sadness so as not to make his day sullen.
(My hubby is 20 years older than me and i met him as he is my dads best friend - i know it sounds odd but its not as strange as it seems, so he is finding things hard too)
However, my dad is a very much happy go lucky, positive, inspiring person and he would just hate it if we stayed sad so im trying to lead by his example and look forward to the fun things we have planned and just cherish every moment.
Remembering in between that there are things we can do like getting free kindling(sp?) and taking it over for them and anything else we can do to help. Its a bit strange because you think obviously he is ill (he was told he would have 2 years if he didnt have the op) and he has symptoms and he looks ill too but we never really noticed them before and he is young and stubborn and so i dont want to do too much and make him feel "different" so its trying to do things to make his life easier without making everything about the illness. Ive never really been through anything like this before i think i feel a bit helpless! But i know he wants everyone to be normal.
Anyways i have taken up far too much of this thread discussing his illness. I appreciate all your kind words so much.Everything is always better after a cup of tea0
