Preparing for winter II

OMG I just cannot believe how fast this thread has gone since I left for holiday two weeks ago. I shall have to take some time to have a good amble through.
Well we we had some not so nice weather the first week so went to Trago mills and bought some wool and knitted two big and beautiful scarves, the first is an amtheyst purple colour which matches with a hat that I have, the other is grey - yes I know it is a mediocre colour but it will go with so much.
I am glad that I bought the John Lewis flannelette sheets when I did, Trago's offering was not very good and flimsy in comparisson. So, the sheets are all done and off my list. We bought a 25kg (half hundred weight in old style) sack of Cornish potatoes and brought those back with us - £5.99 so really chuffed with those and they are in the garage.
Very little to do as regards anything major for winter prepping, it's odds and ends really.
Glad to be home - I did wonder what you were all up to but not a great signal on the phone and nominal what I could see.
Hope you are all in fine fettle :beer:Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money:beer:

i see aldi have their thermals on sale from sunday also their walking themal lined trousers , i can thoroughly recommend both as have had them for several years now , the trousers are great fro dog walking adn soft enough for the "extreme" layer in the house if needed
may help someone0 -
Jammy - thanks for mentioning the quality of the thermal trousers as I saw them in the flyer today and will need something like this for walking new pupstar in winter. I'll have to measure a loosish pair of sweatpants to be sure of the right size to get. The trousers and a couple of rugs and I'll be pretty much done with winter prep.
Mad4camping - good tip re the oilcloth - I use 2 offcuts of vinyl flooring in a similar way; must get them out of storage.
Then I can turn my attention to puppy-proofing the house and garden and get psyched up for house-trainingDeep Joy :rotfl:

Howdy doodly - haven't been on here for a while!
Thought I would chuck my 2 pennys' worth in - our front door has four glass panels in it, and although it's double glazed, I decided to make a curtain for it. I got some thermal lining and fabric on offer from Dunelm, made some simple tab tops for it, and got a curtain pole from a charity shop for 4 quid (sorry we replaced our keyboard with a foreign one when it broke and haven't figured out where the pound sign is yet, or even if it has one..) and hey presto! I have a sewing machine but they are picked up cheaply in Dunelm or second hand. We have been pulling it over as soon as it gets dark already, makes us feel much more snuggly and a must if your front door opens into your living room. All in all it cost about 12 quid (there I go again!), so I am pretty sure it's worth the money. OR check Freecycle/Freegle for some thick heavy curtains and share one with an elderly neighbourI have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

Another thank you here to for the advice about fleeces attached behind curtains.
I got fleece throws from a@da for £2.77 each. Attached them behind my lounge curtains tonight with clothes pegs - used the pegs that are 2 bits of plastic arranged like a V, with a circle of wire from side to side over the top iykwim?
Hooked the top of the wire circle onto the curtain hook then clipped the fleece on to the pegs all the way along. Hope they stay up!
Very windy in east Scotland tonight!
Thanks again0 -

i just love how easy it is to throw in the water, rice, veg and seasonings, give it a good stir then come back when the bell dings (10 min for white rice if i remember correctly, 20 for brown) it's even easier than doing spuds in the microwave cuz you don't have to wash and poke holes in the rice
Reporting back on the rice cooker:)
Used it last night and it wasn't so great. Tried again tonight and it was MUCH better:) 2 cups or white rice and 3 cups of water for just under 20 mins in my microwave. Did it in spurts of five minutes and turned it as my turntable has stopped working. It is soooo easy:)0 -
Hey preppers
The USB gloves/handwarmers are on ebay... http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=usb+gloves&_sacat=See-All-Categories and I even found some USB heated slipper/foot warmers on amazon!!!
HTH
Tee hee :rotfl:Loved these thank you! I spent hours on the laptop entering comps. In the extrem cold of last winter I sat in bed all warpped up and under the duvet. My hands still got chilly. When I went through paypal and it did the price conversion from dollars, these worked out at just £3.25.0
