Preparing for winter II

I feel like making a big change in my life, but I'm not sure how big a one I could cope with. A friend is looking for a lodger, in Newcastle, but I'm wondering if that would be to big a step. Plus...it would be a lot colder! Plenty to think about.
Newcastle is a pretty cool city. It's not like it's the ends of the earth although a pretty big change.
Why don't you check out what the job situation is first, income is the first part of moneysaving I think?
If you feel you need a big change then try and plan the most life impacting things. Spur of the moment stuff is great fun, but it can be costly.0 -
I have been reading this thread for tips as our boiler is gone and as OH has just lost his job we cannot afford to replace any time soon.
Checklist:
Get threshold sill (think its called this) for under back door
Go to the local charity shops looking for lined curtains for the downstairs windows/ back and front doors
Stockpile cold and flu products before I start at uni as I will get freshers flu
Stockpile flour and yeast for the bread maker
Get a couple of cartons of UHT milk just incase
Stockpile dry food and tins
buy lagging as plug hole pipe freezes when the temperature really drops!
Get some cheap walking boots from ebay for when the ice and snow comes.
Mend buttons on my coat
Get the front bedroom decoration done as it is much warmer than the 2nd bedroom (front one gets the sun and the gasfire is in the room below so heat rises up)
Looking at argos as they have secondary glazing film with free delivery
Just ordered fleece mattress protector for our king size bed, on clearance from Asda Direct for when it starts to get really cold at night.0 -

The Value pasta in our MrT is 20p (it did go down to 9p for a couple of weeks so I stocked up), so I don't know why anyone would need to buy 60 packets of it! Unless it's not the 500g packets which are so cheap?
Sorry, I haven't been able to catch up on the thread today as I've been busy all day making cushion covers for my quishions - they are blue which don't go with my sofa, so I've dug some material out of my stash (free from the classroom assistant in my DD2's class :T) and made 4 today. Just need to make another two.0 -

Thanks confuzzled, the hooks are meant to be "damage free" hooks.the instructions say clean with isopropyl rubbing alcohol not domestic cleaners, before sticking adhesive strip to the hook and then to the surface.
Don't even know if these will work but I cant put holes in the walls etc. I've got to try and see how it goes!!Give without remembering, receive without forgetting.0 -

M&S do short dressing gowns like you describe, a bit like bed jackets. I got one last winter for use after an operation, when I needed my upper body to be warm whilst sitting in bed, if that makes sense.

I got a nice grey one in the sale at BHS for just over a fiver a few weeks ago, they only had the larger 18/20 and 22/24 left when I got mine and its lovely and warm without getting caught in my wheelchair.0 -
My prep for winter has stepped up a bit today - last night I actually had to have a blanket over me on the sofa! Not good. So today I finally got around to lining the curtains in our bedroom with the cheap fleeces from Asda. They turned out to be just the right size for my curtains! I also went to Asda and picked up one of the £9 slowcookers, which I am really excited about! We've never used one before, so looking forward to trying it out. While I was there I found a receipt on the floor, brought it home and checked it on their price difference thing, and got a voucher for £5.26! So the slow cooker was almost free!0

Argh, took stuff back to Next (ordered online but they wouldn't let me have a credit account so it was bought on a debit card) for a refund/exchange. As it was a directory order I couldn't have an exchange and the money had to be credited back to my directory account (but I don't have one!!!) Slightly worried that £41 of my money is floating around somewhere and even if it does show up on my 'account' that I will have to spend it in Next again!
After that little rant, I managed to pick up 2 pairs of lined jeans, a furry lined hoodie and socks for the LO.
My mum treated me to a Superdry hoody yesterday. I  at the price but she insisted. Its lovely and warm and will do nicely with casual jeans and THICK socks. May just suck it up and buy another one so I can alternate.
Couldn't find any foil blankets in poundland, I noticed that they had thermal socks - anyone tried these? Rather dubious due to the price.
Not strictly essential (actually not at all) but I was in the Yankee candle shop smelling the autumnal candles. I may source a few online, lit candles always make me feel warm.
Also picked up a pack of 9 Nicky loo rolls from Home Bargains. OH wouldn't let me pick up more (i'll get some more through the week!)
And my heated airer has been dispatched (well it was on Saturday) Hopefully get it soon.
