Oops, posted twice, not sure how that happened. I shouldn't even be on this board, it's making me spend too much money. Not only do I now have Yaktrax and flannelette sheets, but I've just ordered a tonne of coal and I'm trying to sit on my mouse to stop me ordering Craghopper trousers!

I use a metal dustbin - it's a lot cheaper than the feed bins you can buy from agricultural supply stores.

I used to use metal bins to store the horses' feed in and never had any problems & they were kept in the stables with the hay/straw (= lots of mice:eek:).

Hello :-) I spend far too much time lurking on this thread (and I have started my toilet roll mountain lol) and wanted to share my find from today's trip to B&M. They have small gas heaters on offer reduced from £14.99 to £6.99. They run on the same gas canisters as the stoves and if this winter proves to be as bad as predicted I am sure it will be well worth the investment. If nothing else it will keep DH warm when he gets absorbed in some project or other in the workshop! HTH someone :-)
Happy Wife and Mother :-) DD is 7 bump is due in July and DH is 40.

I would love to go on a retreat. Preferably a silent one for a couple of weeks. I've seen a couple of programmes where people have gone on retreat and been envious. One group of women went to an order of nuns, and the most recent one I saw was last year. The trouble is that retreats are just so expensive. I'm an atheist, but I need the batteries recharged without having constant demands made on me.
Hi Justamum it might be worth looking at a convent near you - I cant remember where you are but you will probably find that there is a 'suggested' cost and you could just go for a couple of days or however long you want - you are under no obligation to attend the services. they nearly all have guest rooms available -you can check out their websites. Mine was an organised group retreat through our Diocese and we went to a neighbouring Diocese's 'house' in a very remote glen - no mobile signal no tv no radio but all mod cons in the kitchen and we took all our food with us - we had quiet times and very noisy times too.
    Peace will be mine

Just watched the weather and they have confirmed that for the rest of the week, it is going to be cool during the day, chilly by night and with cloud cover. I am sorely tempted to put the heating on tonight. I think summer is well and truly over and we are looking at an early Autumn and the start of an early winter as well.

    Evening preppers

Well I think I've pretty much got everything I need. I've added to my toilet roll mountain today - total of 54 so far - but I live alone so I think that enough for the time being. The tin and packet stash is looking good and I've got enough washing powder and washing up liquid to supply the army. I've also started stocking up my garage freezer with frozen veg and onion for winter casseroles/stews. I've added some lemsip and cough medicine to the first aid cabinet as well.

I think it'll just be a case of replacing anything I've used as I go along :D oh and finding some blooming de-icer
As my dad always used to say 'Just because you've got the money doesn't mean to say you have to spend it all at once'

DH has lit a fire again tonight. This is unheard of in our house. Usually around October time when he caves in.

I think it seems "proper autumny" now. You can smell it in the mornings. I usually love it, but I'm getting a bit unnerved about how early it is and how long the winter is going to seem - again. Last year's seemed to go on for ever.

I'm chuckling at all the loo roll hoards that have been started - it's great!:D

mmmmm, think a couple more may be needed - I'm sitting around 170 just now (also me only)!:o

Seriously, I am a bit paranoid in that dept - without TMI I have a medical condition that does mean I would hate to be stuck without any and I think that makes me lean towards having too many!

  • Craghoppers arrived, but the linings are thinner than expected. I tried on a pair for an hour and didn't feel any warmer than I do in cord trousers and leggings, so they are going back. I do feel the cold, and it hasn't been warm here this weekend. If they had done the trick for me, they would have been a real bargain.

For extra warmth, I have ordered a heated throw from Amazon, which I'll snuggle under on the sofa. No doubt the cat will enjoy it too! I think it will be a good investment as (apart from the cat) I live on my own and I don't want to heat the whole house up just for me, till it's absolutely necessary.
If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Don't hoard it. Don't dole it out like a miser. Spend it lavishly like a millionaire intent on going broke.
