stay safe Kathy, and i have a question for you, home made biscuits..... do you have a recipe for them? at the moment i have to confess using a packet mix from a store that sells lots of american products, as we are hooked on biscuits and gravy!!! (american biscuits are like fluffier scones for those who haven't had them, and the gravy is a white sauce type gravy seasoned well with chunks of cooked down sausage in it) i will admit i add old bay seasoning to my gravy but wow its good!! :D

you can find recipes online for the gravy by searching for sawmill gravy, i should make some, i haven't had any since my last trip back to the states when i went to a cracker barrel restaurant mmmm
  • ok ive a few more bits to add to my winter list

buy wind up torch/phone charger - not escential really
curtains for bathroom windows? - not sure, will discuss with mum when she is up
sort out car kit (de-icer, washer fluid, phone, charger, blanket, shovel & brush)
tomato soup (i go through buckets of the stuff) still got plenty left so will see how i go and maybe buy more november time
uht milk - will check dates on wed when i go to costco
diluting juice - on offer at costco
    rice
more loo roll - on offer at costco so getting 2 bags, basically 80 loo rolls
sausages for freezer - costco again (wont buy any others as these are delish)
    chicken breasts from butchers
    steak from butchers
    instant mash (love the stuff)
    lasagne sheets
5 x packs turkey mince - buy one extra each time i go to supermarket
    3 x packs lamb mince
huge bag of curly fries - costco
huge bag of chips - costco

extras that ive thought of after reading more of other peoples prep
more cat litter - getting at costco on wednesday
    de-icer in bulk
    screenwash in bulk

I`ve just seen the biggest spider in the world run past the sofa  I normally don`t like to kill anything but i`m afraid the hoover had to come out for that one, good job it has a detatchable part to get things that are hard to get to. Thats all i need now, all the spiders making a beeline for indoors as its getting colder outside

    SD

we've had the spiders taking up residence in the flat again too. sure sign it's getting colder on a longer term basis vs the odd cold day!

i took my daughter to dundee yesterday and we got her two of the all in one fleece sleepsuits for just £6 each, turns out she still fits in the size 13 years, we tried the size 8/10 womans on her first but even if i had cut off the extra length for the legs it still had way too much extra fabric around the chest and belly and the arms and legs were really looose too... but next year, i think she'll have to move to them.

i was tempted to try on the mens all in one fleece animal sleepsuits but they only went up to size XL and i probably need an XXL, if i hadn't been in so much pain by then from my swollen knee i would have taken the time to chance it and try one on... i wish primark would go online, we were both complaining about the store heaving with customers, it being too hot and too loud.... and my daughter has now decided that after this trip with me to primark and a fairly recent one with her dad to the sauchiehall location in glasgow (MUCH bigger store) that she loathes shopping at malls etc and just want's to buy things at charity shops :T let's hope that attitude sticks with her, it will seriously help my wallet :rotfl:

i also got us both the heavy knitted snoods they had, a pack of mens socks for me and a few pairs of sale jog bottoms for her. we tried the gloves on but omg the fleece ones were sooo tiny, i mean i know i have large hands, my fingers are as long as most mens thankfully my hands aren't quite as wide though nearly. but even my daughter who won't be 10 til oct had problems with the fleece gloves being too tight in the fingers!

i won't waste my time with the knit ones, they always unravel quickly and aren't very warm, always too short for me in the fingers anyway and not great for her either. i tried to find them in the mens section but they had no gloves at all for men so i'll just keep an eye out online or at poundstretchers for some thinsulate ones, not glamourous but warm and cheap. we do have some now but we always wind up losing a pair or two each winter so i'm always on the look out for more

i also decided to treat myself to a new winter coat. my current one is well brown and ugly and whilst it still fits last year i accidentally stepped on the zipper and had to use some needlenose pliers to prise the catch at the bottom open wide enough to still work. it does work but it's a right pain some times and like i said it's brown and ugly so i'll use the brown one for times when i won't be seen too much and for snowball fights etc and save the nice new purple one for going out in public. thankfully i always buy all my scarves, gloves, snoods etc in black so they'll go fine with the new coat :T

I have tinned foods that I can eat as they are for example:

    cooked beans
    chickpeas
    sweetcorn
    corned beef
    fruit
    tuna

The medicines and first aid are just general things:

    plasters
    dressing
    bandages
    cold and flu treatments
    Prescription meds
and things specific to our families needs

I am just trying to make sure we have the sensible things that we may need during the winter for bump scrapes and health issues not requiring a doctor.

We are unlikely to be unable to get to the shops as we are in quite a built up area with good facilities however if we are under the weather, that combined with bad weather may be enough to keep us indoors so better prepared than hungry :)

Something to remember is if you have animals that need meds, ours both have repeat prescriptions so i`ll be getting in front with those too.

Little oldie need heart meds and the younger woofaloe needs meds for hormones otherwise she pees without realising it. We could survive if we ran out of the younger ones meds but little oldies tabs are an absolute must. He also has non prescription tablets for his arthritis and if he goes for a couple of days without those he`s terrible so i make sure that we have lots in. He now has 6 months supply of the non prescription ones and an extra month of the prescription ones.

I`ll be making that two months ahead at least by bringing the time i order it to a week earlier each month so that we don`t notice the cost as much.

it's more the biscuits, i've tried some from american sites but they never come out as nicely as the packet mix, i'm fine on the gravy as i can make that from scratch.

oh sorry i meant that for anyone else wanting to make it for themselves, i've never seen sawmill gravy mix, in the states or the uk (might fall over from shock if i did see it here!)

is it bisquick you're using or are they ones in the little boxes, damned if i can remember the name now but they also do blueberry muffins and such like , boxes used to be blue and white, it's been 12+ years and i sometimes forget the names!

if it's bisquick try doing a google search as it's really just a mix of flour, some bicarb or baking powder and some salt if i remember correctly, in fact here's a slew of them to check if it's the other whose name i can't remember a google search for the brand name and recipe in google should also give some options... worth a shot as it would be far cheaper than ordering from the american ex pat sites... after searching for libby's pumpkin pie mix one year i decided to learn how to bake pumpkin pie from scratch, omg the prices

still wouldn't mind the odd jar of miracle whip (sorry but none of the salad creme here is quite the same) or some jolly ranchers candy and ooh how i miss graham crackers (sorry but digestive biscuits are NOTHING like graham crackers and do NOT make a suitable substitute tastewise and barely texturewise, it's all lies!) but i have friends that take requests when they go on holiday to the states so eventually i get a stash to savour :rotfl:
  • nom nom nom nom no m ty :)

    i feel a treat for dinner :D

Confuzzled try this site for some treats :D i'm lucky enough to be able to pop in and they have a great selection, just have to avoid the twinkies  :happyhear
