We were watching coverage of it tonight on BBC News 24 Kathy and it looks a monster, but as with most of these hurricanes once they hit land they tend to run out of power and it gets downgraded to a tropical storm. We were on holiday in Cuba a few years back and good grief, when one hit it was terrifying and that was classed as a 'tropical storm' as well - it was not even a hurricane.

You might want to have a look at the online version of one of the UK's newspapers to show you that we have covereage of what is going on:-

Stay safe, stay calm and stay tuned and you will be alright. Saffy our springer is not happy with thunderstorms either, but they will be alright as long as you are near them and they feel reassured they will come though it. Lets hope that it's more a storm in a teacup than a full scale onslaught. When you get five minutes pop in and let us know how you are - in the meantime our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours for a safe passage to clear sunny skies again. :)

DH has it on the tv now too. Apparently its shrunk to a category 1 but 500 miles wide

Sounds as though everyone is on standby and as ready as they can be. Good luck to everyone over the pond tonight.

    Hi guys
I have ordered me and my husband some craghoppers as reading these posts they seem to have some good reviews. I have also ordered myself a pair of black regatta winter ones as well (not sure of reviews anyone with any experience please let me know) and also my DD a pair of childrens winter regatta ones for only £6.95 (size 5-6) still children sizes avail from Trekwear, just hoping these will keep her warm (not the nicest of colours i have to add but not bothered about that going for comfort over fashion) Not allowed to add link as a newbie Apologies if this has already been posted. xx

Sunny day --Just got back from Mr M's - but NO DUVETS or bedding at all! I asked and they said they only carry it when its 'on sale' - didn't really understand what he meant by that but he did say they would be some next week, so fingers crossed. I wonder if your store is a mega big one?

It is quite a big MrM`s but not huge, i really thought that they would be in all the stores. They were in a different place from where i would have expected to find them in ours. There is one aisle full of homewares and bedding etc but the ones i found were three aisles away with all the reduced gardening bits and bobs. It seemed like the summer ones should have been there at the cheaper price and the winter ones should have been on the normal aisle at full price but i`m not complaining lol. Hope that you find some soon.

Kn0rr do a ham stock cube which is what I use in my lentil soup instead of bacon - hope that helps :)

OO thanks for that, i`ve never seen a ham one before. I`ll add that to next weeks shopping list :D

Kathy - Hope that everything is ok, keep safe!

I love the cooking bacon too, i went to look for some earlier today as MrM`s have it but the shelf was empty. I`ll keep looking though as my lentil and bacon soup is a winter warmer that i just can`t do without. I have tried a different recipe this week which is one of Mrs Mcawbers - chicken and sweetcorn soup. I made it with chicken stock and didn`t even put any of the meat into it and it was stunning. I now have two lovely cheap soup recipes that will be firm favourites this year.

Sunnyday-- would you please post your recipes for both the lentil and bacon soup and the chicken and sweetcorn as well. They sound very lovely and I just love soup.

Earlier this week we had a roast beef in the crock-pot and I saved the leftover meat and broth for vegetable beef soup in the freezer.

We have cottage pie frequently over the winter because OH is a very picky eater (he is also thin as a rail:mad:) and this is one of his faves. In the US they use the terms Shephard's Pie and Cottage Pie interchangeably. I do NOT think most people know that one is made with lamb and the other with beef. Lamb is not very popular in my area. Many more people eat venison than lamb because we have many deer and deer hunters. One cannot buy venison in the store or horsemeat:eek: in the markets here. One store used to carry frozen rabbit but I haven't seen it in a very long time. Most American's eat chicken, beef, pork of all types, turkey, fish and seafood. They are not very adventurous except for some hunters. We don't eat much duckling, goose, quail, or capon. Cornish hens are readily available and are considered to be "fancy" food. There is no black or white pudding here either!

Yes stay safe Kathy. My DD and her dad are off to New York in December and Im trying to prepare them now for the wintry weather but it is falling on deaf ears a little. I will keep persisting:eek:
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
