Preparing for winter II

We've had torrential rain this afternoon. Everywhere feels so cold & damp:(
Its been pouring down here all day, north east coast.
Last night was very cold and got dark realy early.
I've never known an August where I've had to put the lights on when I got up at 6.45am but I've had to do that all this week as its been so dark in the mornings.
I feel like I've went to bed one night and woke up three months later as its like November.
All this week I've went to bed wearing PJs and fleecy socks (don't usually do that till December), and last night my husband even wanted the electric blanket on.
If this weather keeps up its going to be a long winter .0 -
We've had another glorious day here today on the Fylde Coast(although I was at work today) DH hung DD's double bedding out for me when he got in from work and it was dry in just over three hours.0

Have been reading through this massive thread and noted down all the fabulous ideas - and bought some Muck boots and Craghopper trousers on your recommendations. Boots are fantastic - arrived this morning, as did the trousers, but they are a bit big! Will have to sort that out, but they are lovely trousers. Kids keep asking what the parcels are - two in one day is a record here!
Have been making a pantry storage cupboard in the back of the garage today, and thrilled to be getting stocked up for the colder months ahead. Have bought my DD12 a fleece lined rain jacket from the Factory Shop today for just £8 which is a great find for us, and it will be warm and dry for her in the months ahead as she has to stand at the bus stop for the school bus each morning. Also been to Tesco and stocked up on cat food and litter with the double up clubcard vouchers, and took advantage of the Branston Buy one get two free offer - DD15 asked if I was starting a wind farm!! She'll be glad of them on her baked potatoes in the winter!
Thanks for all the fab ideas - you're a great bunch.December GC: £3500 -

Ahhh, that's not fair. I still want some de-icer. Where's a foot stomping smiley-lols
did you know that by spraying vinegar on your windscreen at night it won't freeze up so badly - i used vinegar throughout last winter and had to use very little de-icer
this cold season - i am going to try vinegar on the screen - then cover with newspaper - as i reckon that should work well too - and hopefully all i will need to do is peel back the paper each morning (i haven't tried this before - and the paper might need a vinegar soak - but i'll try anything that saves me money and helps the environment / uses less chemicals)saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
made loads last year :beer:0 -
Good evening preppers, it's taken me absolutely ages to catch up, think we should look at buying shares in Craghoppers as they do so well out of us.........:rotfl:
Was having a conflab with my friend and neighbour SuperGran yesterday and she mentioned Thingummy, one of our neighbours who slipped on the ice outside Shoebox Towers and broke his arm, which called to mind another neighbour who fell and broke her ankle just outside her own home. This was last winter. The gal was about 30 and the bloke about 50 so they're not the stereotypical frail elderly.
I remembered several near-falls on compacted and then-frozen snow and that was just getting between home and workplace, which is only a 10 min stroll across the city centre. Had a sobering imagining of how awful it would be if I'd bust a limb and have decided Yaktrax are a definate purchase.
I have also told my pensioner parents, who had a terrible time skidding around on foot last winter, that they will be getting Yaktrax at Xmas as well as more conventional stuff as I don't want my oldies falling and hurting themselves.
A pal who works the ambulances tells me that day 3 of a big freeze up is when they start getting the frail elderly brought in with broken bones. For a couple of days of bad weather, people hunker down, then they run out of milk and bread etc and venture out and that's when the accidents happen. So, good idea to encourage the elders to perhaps have a carton or two of UHT milk in the cupboard and maybe bread in the freezer, should they own one, so that they're not driven out before the thaw.If I fall over I normally land on my rear which is so well-padded all that suffers is my dignity, but I shall skip around in my Yaktrax (never even heard of them before reading here, thank you for posting about them) and feel that I have prepped for emergencies.
Hope everyone had a prep-tastic weekend and that all your parcels arrive on time.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Oooh, didn't know that. Will give it a try as I do try not to use de-icer at all but last year did have to resort to it.0 -
OK, Poundland now have de-icer on their website so perhaps it is going to be in all stores now/soon. Know it wasn't in our nearest one last week as DH and DD couldn't get me any.0
